The security officers raided TTP hideouts after receiving a tip off that the militants were planning an attack on the 10th of Muharram.
The militants reportedly retaliated and during the exchange of fire, one Rangers official also lost his life.
Hand grenades and weapons were also seized during the operation.
Previous encounters

An alleged member of the TTP was also killed on September 18 during an encounter in Karachi's Manghopir area. Separately, two suspected terrorists were apprehended from Gulshan-e-Buner area of Quaidabad.

@Bakhtiyar Ghazi Khan:
You live in archeology and can only think of mummies and fossils. My comments are based on human thinking and human feelings. As a matter of fact an African, a Caucasian, an Arab or any race have the same feelings, if only they can express themselves freely and escape from weird thinking minds.
The way you think and the way rest or most of others think is different. Just for you to realize, read the comments from readers on the other news in ET on the Google ad that went viral. Of the 58 comments there, just two or three are in the line of your thinking. How much disconnected you are from the rest of the world. @Raj - USA: Pakistanis are Pakistanis. We neither are, nor ever were Indians. Our culture comes from the Indus River Valley civilization (Septa Sindh, seven rivers). We are not part of India's Ganges river based civilization. This is why the Arabs called Pakistan "Sindh" and India as "Hind" almost 1,400 years ago. Do not conflate terms. India is basically a name given by the English to their territory, which you adopted.
Archaeological evidence shows that Pakistanis are a completely different race than Indians, the differences coming in the form of skin color, eye color, hair color, skull structure, facial features, genetic markers, and cultural differences. Pukhtoons, Baloch, Punjabis, Sindhis, Kashmiris, and numerous other groups native to Pakistan share numerous genetic similarities to each other. We are descended from and successors of the Indus River Valley civilization (Harrapa, Mohenjo-daro, etc).
what is JI and Mr Hasan take on this issue ?...who is shaheed and who is not...? mr hasan 180 million people of Pakistan will never forgive you.....
bigsaf, leave Sunni out of it. Wahabis/Salafis pretend to be Sunnis.
@Rex Minor: What makes you think that others who are with me on this issue are only Indians? I am sure many, if not all, who recommended my comments are Pakistanis.
Comments from @Galuru Ben has explained it nicely. Basically, many Pakistanis are also the same as Indians. Only that some have been taught confusing theories and many are scared to come out against the talibans. It will change soon and you will see it.
Aschraful Makhlooq:
Pakistan is not a Wahabi-only country. We have freedom of religion here.
These TTP are the real Yazeeds of today.
@Aschraful Makhlooq: Do not try to spread sectarian hatred. The people who were killed in Karbala were The prophets family. Muharram processions mourne the death of the Prophets family memebers - any problem with that?
The family of the ranger martyred should be very proud and may Allah bless them and give them sabr.
As for the rest of the dead and their funders and trainers i hope they get justice for their horrible intentions in this world and the next.
@Rex Minor: @Raj – USA Sir, as a matter of interest what makes you and the 62 other indians feel happy about the deaths of the so called Talibans by the Karachiwalas.? Rex Minor
62 other Indians? However, your comment shows how little you understand the Indian psyche.
We do not differentiate between groups that inflict violence on civilians, be it Indian, Pakistani or Afghan. Therefore for Indians, TTP, Afghan Taliban, Al Qaeda, LeT, LeJ, etc. are all birds of the same feather. We also do not take kindly to those who abjure our Constitution.
The killing of the 3 TTP men by the Rangers is music to our ears even though it is too little and too late because it is a step in the right direction and gives us hope that someday Pakistan will realize through its own catharsis that it must take out all of the jihadi elements in its society.
Congratulations. Let us hope it is the beginning of the end of terrorism in Pakistan. No such murders take place in Iran or Lebonan where Sia are allowed to mourn without being attacked by Whabi terrorists. Let us work like hammer and anvil to crush all extremists who have taken over our Pakistan.
US CENTCOM,
Glad to read those words. And many congratulations on taking out Mehsud, it was much needed.
Terrorist organizations like the TTP have left very little to ponder in regards to their terrorist agenda. Thousands of innocent people have fallen victim to their atrocities in Pakistan alone. It is easy to see that they have stepped up their terrorist activities in the city of Karachi. The need of the hour is to send a stern message to these repeat offenders. The law and order must preside in order to restore peace in the city. We commend the brave security personnel who are working night and day to end violence in the city. It is simply in our best interest to see a safe and secure Pakistan. We cannot have a safe and secure region without a safe and secure Pakistan. We fully support the government of Pakistan and stand united in regards to our peace objectives in the region.
Ali Khan DET, United States Central Command
The only reason things shutdown during Muharram is due to the threat (and reality) of violence against the Shia-at-ali by the chai-walas of the saudi state, our country was founded by a non practicing shia, with no preference for either shia or sunni; isn't holding a procession along a prearranged route a democratic right, in all civilised countries? The hate for the commemoration of Ashura by some in Pakistan, is due to Saudi influence, they don't want Ashura to be marked because it defines the Shia sect, and since Shias are in majority in all the oil producing areas of Saudi Arabia, they wish to stop Ashura thus stopping the Shia, furthermore because the Saudi's associate Shia=Iran, Shias must be suppressed in general, everywhere because practice of Shia faith means Iranian influence, in their backward view of the world. Thus the recent (last 30years) increase in the hatred for Shias in Pakistan stems from Arab fear and Jealously of Iran, why should Pakistan allow itself to become a abattoir to satisfy Guld-Arab insecurity???
before Zia the SSG used to chant Ali! Ali! Ali! before their missions, but alas praising and emulating the first male muslim is a bid'ah in your eyes now....
A word on rangers performance I recently visited Karachi ... met Ranger personnel as well as civilians The opinion of civilians was quite interesting .... they all were happy from the on going operation by Pak Rangers .... They told me that rangers are operating against all criminals without any prejudice Rangers personnel were motivated and high spirited .... ready to restore peace in country
ET needs to wake up This picture is of Pakistan Army ... that too wearing old CCD which shows the picture is old Pakistan Rangers wears a different uniform
@Aschraful Makhlooq: Because there are no imam bargah's in Saudi Arabia.
@Aschraful Makhlooq: Because in Pakistan the majority do not speak or understand arabic language or arabic culture but symbolicaly call themselves Muslims, also because their forefathers were of hindu religion. What they need is a cultural revolution, to appreciate the values of the Islamic religion.

@Raj - USA
Sir, as a matter of interest what makes you and the 62 other indians feel happy about the deaths of the so called Talibans by the Karachiwalas.?
Rex Minor
@Aschraful Makhlooq :
Because we are NOT an Arabian state, and neither do we plan to be one.
GOOD. More terrorists dead.
That is not a picture of rangers; that is the Pakistan Army
Great job Rangers- we are so proud of you!
well done rangers - we salute your bravery and sacrifice
pakistan zindabad
excellent job by Rangers and thank you our martyred Rangers official for protecting us from the insurgents and sacrificing your life for our tomorrow. Rangers please disclose all the culprits name on media
Four months are declared the most sacred in which every type of quarrel/wrangle is strictly prohibited and that months are 1-Zulqada 2-Zulhaja 3-Muharram and 4-Rajab But unfortunately in Pakistan in Muharram security threats are increased and Pakistan is declared Shia state most especially importantly on 8th,9th and 10th Muharram and people are not allowed to roam freely just due to blockade of roads by the army,rangers and police and even mobile phones' services are blocked..... Why does it happen in Pakistan largely and why doesn't happen in Saudi Arabia,UAE and some other Arabian states??????
Great work!
My salute to the ranger martyred while protecting us. His sacrifice should be remembered.
Rashid - There is no difference between you and Munawar Hasan... Both trying to impose what they personally think to others and discussing a very very useless thing which no one of us can decide even if we know a person very well from Day-1.
To the Rangers official who was martyred today,
Thank you for your sacrifice - May you rest in peace in the sadqa of Maula Hussain a.s
Forever indebted.
Such heroic action of the Rangers not only deserves a great job sentiment, but should be compensated with a raise or something far better to urge others into safeguarding the lives of thousands.
Very happy to see the Rangers fighting courageously and taking down the talibans. This is very good sign. Few more brave fight by the Rangers and the TTP will lose its courage. Looking forward to that day soon.
Sad day for JI and Munawar due to shaheed TTP brothers. Rest of the nation will honor shaheed ranger official who died saving lives.
Good Job!
I love reading good news from Pakistan my beloved country :)
Really TTP men? When those Karachi votes for, were screaming at the top of their lungs a couple of years ago, about Talibans gaining strength in the metropolis, they were rubbished and now TTP men are all over the city.
