The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) led government has empowered MPAs to hold accountable both national and international non-governmental organisations (NGO) in their respective areas here on Tuesday.
“This step by the K-P government is aimed at better implementation of projects undertaken by NGOs in various parts of the province,” an official at Civil Secretariat Peshawar informed The Express Tribune. The lawmakers will carry out their responsibilities in consultation with the deputy commissioner.
However, according to the official, a majority of the MPAs which have been accorded a supervisory role over NGOs hail from the PTI.
The list which is available with The Express Tribune does not include a single MPA from the Qaumi Watan Party or the Awami National Party, tiling the balance mostly in favour of the ruling majority party. The remaining two coalition partners, however, are on the list.
By giving certain MPAs such oversight, the PTI is a message of concord to the opposition, stipulated the official.
While appreciating the move for the role it can play in ensuring development schemes are well-implemented, the official noted there were some practical “drawbacks”.
Handing lawmakers supervisory powers can also pave the way for MPAs to “twist the arm” of NGOs for various benefits, said the official. For NGOs, this means having to remain in the good books of elected representatives to ensure steady operations.
Some of the lawmakers assigned to monitor NGOs include PTI’s Mehmood Jan from Peshawar, Muhammad Zahid Durrani from Mardan, Muhammad Arif from Charsadda, Faisal Zaman from Haripur and Malik Qasim Khattak from Karak.
MPAs from other parties include Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl’s Munawar Khan from Lakki Marwat, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Saeed Gul from Lower Dir and Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Party’s Muhammad Ali Tarkai from Swabi.
Altogether 17 lawmakers from PTI and 10 from other parties have been vested with such powers.

@Asad k shaikh...didnt you notice the news as no MPA from QWP was entrusted with supervisory powers over INGO/NGOs under the decision of KP government...it was after that the event unfolded of break up alliance between PTI and QWP.. Sense of news as a must Asad sb before comment.
