KARACHI:

A senior officer, serving with the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for the last 21 years, was arrested by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Saturday.

The accused, Tariq Mehmood Khan, was arrested from his residence at the PIA apartments in the airline’s colony by the Cyber Crime Circle of the FIA. An FIR No. 23/13, under Sections 36 and 37 of the Electronic Transaction Ordinance 2002, was registered against him on behalf of the PIA’s Revenue Manager Tahir Niaz and Security Manager Col Tahir.

“The complainants told us that they were receiving threatening emails from an anonymous person,” said the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Habibur Rehman, while talking to The Express Tribune. “We raided his house after the PTCL provided us with the domain.”

The officer said that the accused had sent two emails to the higher-level officials, as well as, other employees and tried to blackmail them, accusing them of corrupt practices. “This man has been serving at the PIA from the last 21 years and is a grade-17 officer,” explained Rehman. “According to him, he took these steps as he was disheartened because he was transferred from the CRC department to the marketing and intelligence department on August 26.” The officer maintained that it was an individual act and no other person was involved.

On the other hand, the PIA spokesperson, when contacted, was not aware of his arrest and said that the FIA officials had not informed them about the incident.

It is public record that the same official Tahir Niaz was dismissed by the esteemed Air marshal Rao Qamar Suleman ( Ex PAF and PIA Chief) as GM Revenue Management on account of incompetence.

FIA has arrested someone for potentially speaking up against alleged corruption in PIA. In my view the investigation should be extended to uncover the complete truth of the allegations against the accused i.e Tahir Niaz and Col. Tahir. We all know that there are rats under the carpet or PIA would not be in such bad shape.

While discipline is of prime importance, allegations against someone looking after 'Revenue Management' surely raise an eyebrow and must be probed.

Someone who has served for an organization 21 years cannot do something as drastic unless confronted with some sort of vandalism.
