Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani visited earthquake affected areas in Awaran on Tuesday to review relief and rehabilitation work in the Balochistan province, stated an Inter Services Public Relations press release.

"He was briefed at the field Headquarter of Pakistan Army's Formation undertaking relief and rehabilitation work," the release read.

"He reiterated the resolve that Pakistan army, in collaboration with the government of Balochistan and concerned federal ministries, will continue the relief efforts despite attempts to disrupt relief work by miscreants."

Kayani admired the resolve displayed by the local population in withstanding the hardships caused by the natural calamity.

A total of six battalions and eight helicopters have been deployed for relief and rehabilitation work in the affected areas.

ISPR went on to detail the army's contributions as follows:

"The Army troops have, thus far, distributed around 6,000 tonnes of food items and 37,000 tents. Moreover, a well-equipped Army Field Hospital has also been functioning, round the clock, where more than 17,000 patients have been treated."

While interacting with the area's influential people and local administration officials, the COAS assured the continued support of Pak Army to the people of Awaran and Balochistan Government, till the affected population were adequately settled.

Lady Doctors of Pak Army are rendering service in Earthquake affected area, while on the other hand even male doctors of provincial government are reluctant to go to these areas. Admissions in professional colleges in Balochistan are ethnic & quota based. Every district has its own quota in Medical College like BMC. Strangely those who got admission on quota of these districts refuse to serve in their own district. They even refused to assist in calamity and disaster like famine, flooding, earthquakes & outbreak of diseases as a follow up of calamity. Balochistan government must make a policy of compulsory service in home districts for people who avail district quota or should abolish this quota system as merit works the best.

Army is not allowing local, national and international organisations to enter certain areas. People in those areas have no shelter, water or food. Last week the Army conquered one village in Mashkay where separatists had a stronghold. No relief was provided to people in that village. Thousands of men, women and children are homeless and shelterless in Awaran, whereas trucks loaded with tents and supplies are stopped near Khuzdar.

Just two days ago I was stuck in traffic in Karachi for three hours because Army Chief was passing. I could hear children crying, ambulances wailing, people cursing. Alas, our forces are good at conquering civilians but not so good in the battle fields. Hence we are dying to have dialogue with Taliban, so that we can surrender as we did about forty years ago.
