Pakistan said on Sunday it would review its relationship with the United States after Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud was killed two days earlier in North Waziristan, near the Afghan border.
"I feel confident that the Pakistani authorities will maintain open supply routes and transit routes because it is in Pakistan's own interest to contribute positively to stability and security in the region," Rasmussen told a news conference.
The Pakistani government denounced Mehsud's killing as a US attempt to derail peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban, who have killed thousands in their campaign to impose their rule.
Some Pakistani politicians have demanded that transit routes through Pakistan, used to supply NATO-led forces in Afghanistan, be cut in response.
Pakistan is the main route to supply US troops in landlocked Afghanistan with everything from food and drinking water to fuel. Any closure could be a serious disruption as US and other Western forces prepare to withdraw most of their troops from Afghanistan by the end of next year.
Pakistani cooperation is also seen as vital in trying to bring peace to Afghanistan, in particular in nudging the Afghan Taliban, allied to, but separate from, the Pakistani Taliban, into talks with the Kabul government.
Pakistan and the United States agreed in July 2012 to reopen land routes to Afghanistan, ending a seven-month crisis that damaged ties between the two countries. Without the Pakistani route, NATO forces are forced to use more expensive methods, such as airlifts, to bring supplies in.
Rasmussen declined to comment on the drone strike that killed Mehsud but appeared to lend support to US actions, saying "terrorism constitutes a threat to the whole region".
He said he believed the Pakistani authorities, including the government and the military, realized it was in Islamabad's interest to ensure peace and stability in Afghanistan.
"The security of Afghanistan and Pakistan is inter-linked. There can't be security in the one country without security in the other," he said.

Pakistan will block the NATO supply lines, but AFTER all troops have left Afghanistan. Seems like a fair compromise :)
"Pakistan is the main route to supply US troops in landlocked Afghanistan with everything from food and drinking water to fuel. " Drinking water,too, eh! Is it cheaper to airlift drinking water than set up a water purification plant in Afghanistan?
@Pradhan
You are not so naive, go figure out yourself.
The compromise woul be to let the supplies of food through to the troops but not let their lethal equipment be transported out of Aghanistan.

The collateral damage in the drone attack in the context of civilian deaths deaths are horribly high and not the 3 percent or 67 civilians killed by the strikes as were reported by the united states. It is as high as 50 civilians for every one militant killed. More than 2400 were killed in the strikes so far and the number of civilians can be as high a 2000. Pakistan is left with no option other than to block the NATO supply to give them a message. United states just can't get away with murdering innocent children and women any more. More actions need to be taken like getting out of this pseudo war on terror,

@Ali Raza: It helps to keep on dreaming.The best way to cope with inadequacy.
@csmann - as we speak, Iran is on its way to become a Nuclear nation even without the support of the world. It's so strong that we just talk about firing a drone, while Iran just hacks it, brings it down, clones it and sends the clone to America as a present. If you think we have the same fate - May god show us that day soon InshAllah.
"Its in Pakistan's own interest" - We've had enough of our own interest so far. In this so called interest we gave our 2'500 soldiers and left almost 5'000 handicapped, 50'000 innocent man women and children have been killed so far and almost the same amount of people have been handicapped. In this war against terror we've been given less and taken more. In a world where people promote peace, care and wisdom - we're shown advertisement's of how not to trust someone and how to look everyone with an eye of suspicion. That's not an interest.
I am just waiting for 20th November. When YOUR INTEREST will be taken away from you. Revenge is always sweet - just like for you the date was 9/11 for us the date will be remembered as 11/20. WORD.
@Javed:
It is strange, If TTP bomb someone in Pakistan then it is India's fault, if the leader of TTP gets killed then it is India's fault. so, Whats up???
WOW the news of supply blocked reached to Europe and they start to beg from Pak for intact supply. Imran Khan you know really how to deal these west mind set! I salute you for such courageous decision in favor of Pak. Nation should strengthen you at that point!
Pakistan is inching towards the status Iran is now.It will be next due to dismantle its nuclear assets.It is falling into a trap set-up by the West.
NO Chief.. we will do this. Imran Khan is going to pay from Nov. 20 to all those drivers, truck owners, cleaners, assistants who will become redundant.
So forget this.....if you are going to ban our export, we don't care.. stop our aid, assistance, go to UN, tell IMF to stop our loans... call back your Ambassadors.....do whatever.. but this time it's Pathan's promise... he has only one say and he is not going to reiterate.
I suspect both India and Afghanistan are hoping for an embargo and eventual total break in US/Pakistan relations. Short term emotional based decisions have long term strategic implications.
This is called true leadership. IK roared like the Lion and we see the results. The shameless Musharraf, Zardari and NS has made us slave of the West. IA the whole nation is with IK, who will free us from these shackles.
Pakistan should realize that no peace is possible in the region without its contribution and cooperation. It should understand its importance and then put its terms and conditions on the table. Its time for Pakistan to get some benefit out of the situation. I think it has paid more than enough price so far. NATO supply should be stopped in response to the 'muder of peace talks with Taliban'. Nobody wants peace in Pakistan.
Pakistan be careful. No unwise action in haste.
In your dreams! Your days and the days of your Indian and Afghani puppets attacking Pakistan from Afghanistan are numbered!
