After Rohit Sharma's stellar 209, James Faulkner starred with a resolute 116 while breaking the record for the fastest Australian hundred (57 balls) and equalling that of the fastest ODI fifty (18 balls) by any batsman.
The visitors could not get the best of starts in their chase of the mountainous target.
After the whole Australian top order was dismissed cheaply by the Indian attack though, in stepped Glenn Maxwell, James Faulkner and Shane Watson to begin the rescue mission.
Maxwell hit seven sixes on his way to a 22-ball 60, while Shane Watson hit 49 with as many sixes.
With the target still a long way ahead, James Faulkner held his resolve and kept hitting the balls all over the park to keep the candle of hope alight for his team.
In 15 overs, Faulkner and Clint Mckay shared a 115-run partnership to give Australia a chance.
With around 60 runs needed from five overs, the Indians were just beginning to get nervous when Mckay got out, followed by Faulkner, around the 45-over mark to see Australia lose the cup and match by 57 runs.
Faulkner made 116 from 73 balls and six sixes.
Both teams smashed 19 sixes apiece in the 38 sixes hit in the overall match.
Indian innings
Earlier, after Australia won the toss and decided to bowl first in the deciding game of the series, Indian opener Rohit Sharma bludgeoned 209 from 158 deliveries to help his team put up 383 runs on the board.
Sharma became the third batsman to score a double century in ODIs and hit 16 sixes to secure the record for most sixes in an innings, breaking Shane Watson's previous record of 15.
After Virat Kohli was run out for a duck and Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh got out cheaply too, skipper MS Dhoni provided a late surge to India with 62.
However, the star of the innings was Sharma by a long distance, who would have carried his bat with a double century under the belt had substitute Moises Henriques not taken a fine diving catch in the very last over.
After his innings, Rohit said it was "probably" the best he has ever played.
"Getting a 200 in ODIs is a wonderful feeling. When I went out to bat, I never thought I'd get a 200. The idea was to stay on the wicket. We know it is a small ground, runs are easy to come by once you are in. I just wanted to stay in and capitalise later."

@ water bottle @Disgruntled-Indian-Fan:
yes thats a joke. runs being scored in excess of 350 everytime. Look at us- no cricket, no money, no runs.
spare a thought.
(addressing both together, just in case you are the same)

@Water Bottle:
The era of honest cricket is dead
What is honest cricket anyways? Eating a cricket ball on the feild? or making a career out of fixing?
my friend the word honesty as u said is passé in all aspects of life.
@Water Bottle:
yes that's true , but the thing is a lot of people infact majority like this wham bam kind of cricket in some form or the other The success of T20 , IPL is a prime example of this.
Fortunately or Unfortunaely " Supply is only a function of Demand" and you have to live with it.
@Himanshu Dev: I agree with you. I imagine the way things are going soon we shall have teams with 10 batsmen and a wicket keeper. All of them will bowl, the sole criterion of good bowling being the ability to throw a ball inside the no-wide zone!
@Ananda Das: @Himanshu Dev:
Agree with the both of you.
This is not cricket.
This is a bleeding joke.
The era of honest cricket is dead.
But then, era of honesty itself is dead.
@Truth detector:
Hyperventilating display of nationalistic jingoism by some Indians on this forum shows nothing but extreme immaturity & infantile behavior on their part.
*So is it only the Indians who show nationalistic jingoism? Go the various forums on this website and see the venom being spewed by both sides on equal terms. My respect for you would have increased if you would reffered both Indians and Pakistanis of this accusation. Unfortunately you chose to implicate only the Indians.-- Sad*
Thank you for proving my point. Infantile !!!!
At the moment you are still struggling to prove your point. Try harder Peace- Happy Deepavali
Thanks to BCCI and the retirement of the golden generation, cricket will become extinct in the next 5 years. Let me explain...
BCCI is all set to 'retire' cricket from public domain for ONE single reason. By making cricket a 'batting slug-fest'. The same batting superstars will be found wanting in swinging & bouncier conditions with the honorable exception of one or two. (e.g. test series in England & Australia)
Cricket is supposed to be a game between bat and ball. Bowlers have been reduced to mere 'punching bags' in Indian conditions. As a cricket lover I would be more interested to watch a match where the pitch has something for both the bowlers and batsmen and even a 140 is defend able in T20 (e.g. IPL 2 in SA).
The golden generation consisted of Sachin, Rahul, Saurav, Anil, VVS and to a lesser extent Srinath & Viru. These guys consistently performed well for India under all playing conditions in India and abroad. with 1 or 2 exceptions, i don't see the current crop excel abroad.
As a DIE HARD Indian supporter...I am sorry to say this...but this is NOT Cricket :( This is a mockery of cricket and bowling. 200s being made as if its a child's play, 100s being scored in 50-60 balls, 50s scored in 18-20 balls!! I'd rather prefer a competitive, low scoring, nail biting contest where a 100 over ODI yields 4-5 sixes max than THIS! Can someone bring back the last 90s and early 2000s? RIP BOWLING!
@SK5:
we won 3 icc international trophy's in 7 years .
2007- t20 world cup
2011- world cup
2013 champions trophy.
tell me what ur team has done? sore loser!
Congratulations team India! Dont brag now. You just know how to tease. Stop fighting here on the blogs atleast.
@Rajesh: Do you remember the India v Pakistan last series in Inida? When india won the last game and celebrated like they saved the world from an alien invasion.
If India wins domestic matches, aren't their opponents simultaneously losing on a tour? And when India is not involved in a series, surely either one team is losing on a tour or the other is losing even at home. Now tell me how much sense there is in repeating an ancient Geoff Boycott inanity about a team that has won world cup tournaments abroad -- more than once. The only team that wins abroad consistently is Pakistan - because no team will play in Pakistan. Point is, how many of its matches is it winning even then (when not playing in the wilderness of the Middle East)? At any rate, I have always found the Pakistan team exciting, swinging as it does from great highs to great lows. They enrich world cricket. It is Pakistani comments, such as those in this column, that are so consistently mediocre.
@Lion: Indian Team without many senior players defeated Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe 5-0 recently. But After that, Zimbabwe defeated the great Pakistan team in Zimbabwe and Pakistan couldn't even chase 188 in first ODI against SA last week. India has won the Champion trophy in Eng this june without even losing the warm up games. Then they won the Tri series in WI. Wake up....!

This is not cricket. It is a nauseating display of self-fixated, chest-thumping nationalism... the tiny ground, lifeless track, silence of the crowd when AUS were smashing it, Dhawan's mocking of Watson, BCCI controlled robot-commentary, Finch's lame LBW - it's a blatant circus designed only for one thing, Indian victory and vain national glory. This was a second string AUS side - 3rd string bowling. esp with Watson down and Johnson out and all good bowlers in AUS. That they came close to winning the series in such artificially controlled circumstances designed to emasculate them is a great credit to them.
Truth detector : U can include some Pakistanis as well. Mate, such tribes are everywhere in the world including this forum . You just have to cop it. Dish it out when ur time comes. So cool now. Enjoy Diwali,
@Fact:
5 world cup wins right?, including 92 and 99. In 92 it didn't matter because we won the world cup and in 99 we came runners up so again insignificant. In effect only three world cup wins were useful for you, overall record stands at 71-50 buddy.
And then let's come to real cricket, test cricket. Again we lead 12-7, PAK has the 3rd best win loss ratio in tests, India is at a distant 7th behind even New Zealand lol.
Learn to respect others and their teams, other teams have achieved much more in cricket as well!!
@Riaz: There after there was icc championship in england where pakistan lost all their matches and india won all of them.You guys are left outs
@Truth detector: You deserve this Go and get your truth detecting instrument repaired.
@Riaz: you must be forgetting, Pakistan lost all world cup matches to India since the world cup started 39 years back,, no one has been through such a big shame as the pakistani team from the last 39 yearsssssssssssssssssss
@Lion: Mate, India is the place every cricketing nation craves to visit including your nation. That shows how powerful and rich Indian cricket is. On the other hand, your nation, even after begging with each and every country to come and play in Pakistan, no nation is interested to play in your so called PAK land. Forget about others, even Bangladesh which is a muslim nation rejected twice PCB offer to play in your nation. This proves how low your nation cricket is placed and the scant respect other nations have for your nation. its bye bye for pakistan.
diwali gift for Pakistan drone and for India batting drones
@Rajesh You must be forgetting, few months the 2-1 series win by Pakistan.
India won the match by 57 runs.Now most of pakistani's comment will be match fixing blah blah blah..
@Lion: Your team are just kids in front of Indian team man.Other than misbah all others are just loosers.
@Lion: Lol which world are you leaving ! Hope not in moon, no body can beat indian batting line up, ofcourse we are weak in bowling. You are talking as if every country will win in there home country.Oh that's why these days pakistan loosing lot of matches.Learn some basics in cricket and then talk.Your media and your senior cricketers itself telling that current pakistani team are mostly unprofessional and ill prepared to play under pressure, go and check youtube..
@Rajesh did you forget the humiliation last year when Pak won ODI series on your soil. Rohit is good player but no player can be great until he succeed overseas. I m sorry but most of your batsmen are mere flat track bullies.
@lion and the irony is u lost to Zimbabwe in test match and our 3 choice team beat'em 5-0 , stay in ur cave u never know a drone might shoot u down . by the way i thought u and US were allies again ironic u fellas are being droned
@Rajesh Buddy u are a cat-turned tiger on your own soil. Once you are out of India, you can't defeat even Zimbabwe. Pakistan is a difficult thing for you to digest. Look at South-Africans, they are feeling too bad against us in a neutral venue.
Indian tigers are roaring.Tigers are basically very difficult to handle once agressive.If Indian team currently play with pakistan then it will be a nightmare for pakistan.
1 ye hain jo akelay hi 209 runs banatay hain, aur kal Pakistan ki puri team 209 runs bana saki thi.
Although it might prove a totally different scenario if Indian bowlers failed to defend this mountain, while Pakistani bowlers easily defended their 209 by a long 66 runs.
Respect.....
