Two cosmetics shops and a passenger van were destroyed when an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by unidentified militants went off in Maidan, Lower Dir district early Friday.

The area is relatively peaceful and the last such incident was reported on May 7, 2013 when a Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) election rally was targeted.

Lal Qilla police official Asim Khan told The Express Tribune the incident occurred at around 2:15am, as a result of which two cosmetics shops in Kat Patti and a vehicle parked nearby were damaged.

The official added police and security forces went to the site later in the morning and reported the shops belonged to Hussain Rahman and his father Khaista Rasool, whereas the damaged pick-up’s owner is Ibrahim Khan.

The official said a search operation was then launched in which 44 suspects were arrested and a case was filed against unidentified militants.
