The importance of teachers

Letter November 01, 2013
Our teachers teach, not to enlighten or inspire, but to earn a living. They have no passion, interest in what they do.

KARACHI: I am a student from Karachi and I believe that the youth of this country ought to be heard. Education, from what I see, has started to become a bit of a joke. Our teachers teach, not to enlighten or inspire, but to earn a living. They have no passion, no real interest in what they do and as a result, they do not end up doing their jobs very well. I do not speak here of all teachers, but those who teach for the right reasons are definitely in the minority.

This is a shame because most people do not understand how great of an impact this has on students — we are always able to detect the attitude of our teachers, which makes us lose interest in studies. Education is not about rote learning; it is about being inspired, spreading awareness and gaining knowledge. It is also about encouraging creativity and thinking out of the box. I plead to any teacher who reads this to please realise what a huge responsibility they have on their shoulders. They are educating the leaders of tomorrow. We are the ones who will be in charge a few decades from now and when you all finally sit back for us to take over, you are going to want us to do a good job and make you proud.

So, please regain that passion for teaching, and teach to inspire and enlighten. Do not just teach for the sake of earning a living.
