LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has demanded that Opposition Leader of the Punjab Assembly, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed be changed, Express News reported on Thursday.

“Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed is not addressing the issues of the public,” PPP Spokesperson Raja Riaz argued. He also stated that PPP will lead a protest if the opposition leader is not changed.

Rasheed had previously told reporters that he would follow the PTI party line in the Punjab Assembly and would play the role of a mature opposition leader. He had said that he would not use his position to settle scores and would take all opposition members on board.

PTI mulls coup against PPP's NA Opposition Leader

Earlier this month PTI leaders had told The Express Tribune that the party finally decided to part ways with the incumbent Opposition Leader of the National Assembly, PPP’s Khursheed Shah.

“PTI has not made any decision yet. But we feel that Khursheed Shah was continuously ignoring other parties sitting on opposition benches on important issues including matter relate to the chairmanship of NA parliamentary committees. We’ll be taking this issue now,” PTI Information Secretary MNA Dr Shireen Mazari had said.

Other parties, including the Awami Muslim League (AML) and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) had pledged their support to PTI. AML chief Sheikh Rashid had said that Khursheed Shah has failed to deliver, and that he is siding with the government on important issues.

“I’ll not only support PTI’s move but also convince other colleagues to vote for changing the incumbent opposition leader in the National Assembly,” he had told The Express Tribune.

Professor Ibrahim of JI had also pledged to support PTI, saying his party will also convince party members to vote for PTI in the National Assembly.

PPP senior leader Ijaz Jakhrani had stated that other parties reserve the right to bring a No-Confidence Motion against Khursheed Shah. “We are ready to face this move because we enjoy maximum numerical strength in the National Assembly.”
