Various intermediate students told The Express Tribune they feel their future has been jeopardised because of unfair checking carried out by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) officials. Their parents said the board’s marking had left hundreds of aspirants from Hazara division out of the competition for admissions in engineering and medical colleges.

Ejaz Khan, father of a student who obtained 577 marks, said, “Soon after giving the intermediate exam my son enrolled in a coaching centre to prepare for engineering college. He was confident he would secure an A grade, however, BISE officials shattered his dream.”
Amir Mehmood, who obtained 602 marks in pre-medical, said the points were lesser than he was expecting as he had studied hard for the exams.
A private school principal, requesting anonymity, accused the BISE authorities of getting papers marked from clerical staff that had no clue about the rules of marking and thus deliberately gave less marks to candidates who otherwise had brilliant academics.
An official within BISE Abbottabad said the authorities had handed over papers for checking to teachers and instructed them to keep the marking strict, which is why the results were poor.
“Students with fewer marks would now either have to opt for B.Sc or give intermediate exams again and apply next year,” he said.
Naveed Khan, an educationist, said the BISE authorities had deliberately done tight marking due to which aspirants for engineering and medical colleges from Hazara could not compete with the students of other boards in K-P.
Several students complained about receiving five marks in the practical exams for Intermediate Part II, which is a failing score.
BISE Abbottabad Controller Examination Muhammad Ali was approached for comments multiple times, but he was unavailable.
An official within BISE said the error was a typing mistake and students who had approached the board had been issued revised result certificates after rechecking.
He also brushed aside allegations of strict marking and said all the rules were followed and no discrimination had been exercised by the authorities.
He further accused the administrations of certain private educational institutions of spreading propaganda against the BISE. “Those who are not satisfied with the result can avail the facility of rechecking,” he said.
According to the Result Gazette of BISE Abbottabad, a total of 31,124 students appeared for the intermediate exams and 18,399 passed. The overall pass percentage stood at 59.12%.
