A report released by International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) said despite the progress recorded in 2013 Global Hunger Index (GHI), the level of hunger in the world remains ‘serious’, with 870 million people going hungry according to estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations. The index, which reflects data from 2008 to 2012, has placed Pakistan at 57th spot on the country-wise hunger index table, while India is ranked 63rd. South Asia significantly lowered its GHI score between 1990 and 1995, mainly thanks to a large decline in underweight children, but was not able to maintain its fast progress.
