KARACHI: At least 34 suspects were caught in targeted raids in the city on Friday, according to law enforcers.

Around one dozen alleged gangsters of Lyari were caught in an exchange of fire with the Rangers and police.

The encounter took place in a raid at the hideout of Lyari’s notorious gangsters, Ustad Taju and Sajjad Khatri, in Khadda Market, Baghdadi in Lyari. The alleged ring leader, Ali Ahmed, was also detained.

Sources further claimed that the Rangers found one submachine gun, six pistols and walkie-talkie sets from their possession. There were unconfirmed reports that two alleged gangsters were also killed during the encounter.

Rangers spokesperson and SHO Munir Chandio, however, denied the killings and said that only arrests were made. Separately, around 20 suspects, including a worker of the Sunni Tehreek Ikram Qadri, were detained by the police.

According to officials, Qadri was nominated in the target killing of police official ASI Mohsin of the Brigade police station.
