KARACHI:

Ayesha Omar is an attractive and talented actor, but her singing career has mostly outraged Pakistani music lovers. Her recent win for Best Album at the Lux Style Awards resulted in social media users spewing hatred on forums, calling her an ‘average vocalist at best’. They even went as far as to say the LSAs are responsible for the death of real music. However, Omar chose to bask in her glory and remain unbothered by the negative criticism.

Omar has once again come under criticism. When the line-up for Coke Studio season 6 was announced, Twitter and Facebook saw posts and memes being severely critical of her inclusion.

He isn’t the only one upset with this decision.

Despite the heat, Omar remains hopeful and is excited to be part of one of the most anticipated music shows on local television. “It is my first time. People expect me to do something ‘poppish’ but I have experimented with something completely different. I am expecting people to be surprised,” says Omar. “It’s a fantastic line-up of people. There is pure rock, classical, folk, pop and international sound. A lot of different genres and sounds are coming together. It is an eclectic mix. People of all ages will find something to love about this season.”

Coke Studio’s success lies in the fact that it lends an opportunity to the artist to experiment and collaborate. “In Coke Studio, nobody tries to impress the audience, everybody has done what comes naturally from the heart,” asserts Omar.

What’s next?

It seems Omar is on a roll and the industry can’t seem to get enough of her vocal skills. The multi-talented actor will also be seen playing the main lead Sandy, in Nida Butt’s production Grease. “For now, I am taking a break from TV acting and going back to my roots of theatre and singing,” says Omar. “I am playing Sandy and will be singing and dancing live. Also featuring actor Sanam Saeed, Grease will be staged next year in January in Karachi followed by Lahore.

Apart from this, the actor is also busy working on music singles and while she claims that she has been offered a lot of opportunities to perform, she is currently committed to the play. “I am being offered a lot of gigs but can’t travel as I am booked with this play. Once, I am done with it then I will travel for gigs to Punjab,” she adds.

Never can a ET article be complete without the mention of Imran Khan.
