The documents, including invoices and letters of interior ministry, disclose that Rs12.26 million were incurred on boarding, lodging and dining charges of Rehman Malik and his coterie at five-star hotels.
Malik ordered payment of over Rs8.06 million for dining and lodging at an upscale hotel of Karachi from the head of Secret Service Expenditure (SSE) of National Crisis Management Cell (NCMC) which works under interior ministry.
This amount tallies with 140 invoices charged to various individuals and paid from secret fund of NCMC.
Similarly, an amount of Rs3.78 million drawn from SSE was spent at a hotel in Lahore.
People named in the invoices of SSE include Malik’s two sons, Ali and Omar, brother-in-law, Malik’s personal staff including Abdul Hameed Awan, Javed Iqbal Raja, Safeer Nasir, Malik’s political buddy Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao, Waqas Malik and Hashmam Malik.
Other people enjoying the illegal facility include Javed Iqbal Raja, Safeer Nasir, Shahid Malik, Ahtesham Malik, Naveed Aassi, Khurshid Ahmed and the list goes on to mention over fifty people.
Apart from Malik, the then minister of state for interior also reimbursed Rs28,913 from SSE in term of POL charges for the vehicle having registration number GA 939. But the amount looks like loose change compared to Rs4.2 million that Malik spent at a hotel in Islamabad from SSE.
The Rs0.8 million spent on Malik’s farewell party was also claimed from SSE, documents revealed.
Apart from the documents mentioned above, which reveal misuse of secret funds worth of Rs12.26 million, the NCMC has spent more than Rs425 million from SSE during the years Malik was interior minister.
Rehman Malik’s version
It was a general practice that the expenditures of NCMC were charged from the SSE account, Malik said, adding that he preferred to continue this exercise.
Even salaries of employees working at NCMC, repairs of their vehicles, POL charges even their utility bills were taken from SSE, the ex-minister said, replying to queries of The Express Tribune.
Malik said he did not spend the amount of SSE, as mentioned, all by himself and some of it went to entertaining select religious personalities.
He did not reject the authenticity of documents however the ex-minister defended the utilisation of SSE.
He admitted that he used secret funds for his sons, relatives and friends but offered that if doing so was proved to be wrong he would pay back that amount from his own pocket.
When asked why his sons, relatives enjoyed hotel stays on public kitty, Malik replied that he often booked rooms with fake names due to security purposes. Nevertheless, several hotel booking invoices paid from SSE bear Rehman Malik’s name.

He has and had serious security concerns and could not book hotels in his own name as it would have risked him and fellow hotel guests. Please try to see the good the RM has done by opposing bad and ongoing risk he has taken taking oppositions.
Nothing would be done to retrieve the squandered tax payers money from Mr Rahman Malik because the current government isn't too different from its predecessor either. Nations begin to disseminate when crook opposing political forces at the helm of affairs get togather and select their own friendly referees ( NAB Chairman).
Can we get the CJP to also pay back the money relating to petrol receipts that his dear son had used to claim monies; this, when the petrol pump to which the receipts belonged didn't even exist.
Apparently politicians need to be taught some basics again. Taking something you are not entitled to is "stealing". Saying an untruth is "lying". Not keeping a promise is "dishonourable".
Polititions do not squander money!!!! They USE the tax payers money for the benefit of their families. They are ENTITLED!!! .
upstart son of a barber who used to attend zia ul haq. what do you expect from such a lot supporting of all the people zardari!
The CJ of Pakistan will not let Malik get away with this, that is for sure.
Mia,
No second opinion on what you said !
Present Government must too be doing the same things. This is what bureaucracy teaches them, form part of the loot, and then gets away with it without ever mentioning its name. As a matter of fact, the bureaucracy is always part of this theft. The principal accounting officer who draws and disburse this amount should be hauled up and made to pay so that next time the fountain head of corruption is not ready to sign invalid payments.
Indeed, democracy is the best revenge. I refuse to believe that 'Even worst democracy is better than military rule'. In our case, it's the other way round. Whoever disagrees and tells us that all this political mess is due to military interventions; he or she's a party to this corruption.
And there is nothing anyone can do about it. His boss and his wife did the same for years yet they were re-elected. Rehman Malik will return a triumphant hero one day to the same halls of infamy!
All these jalsa, Julus, running to capture public offices etc is to loot public money in the name of Demoncracy.
What a great way to spend tax payers money. Already Treasury doesn't get enough taxes.
Corruption rules
It's called theft in the rest of the world - not squandered. As a thief he should be arrested and given his day in court.
:-)
Hr does not have to he is richer than Zardari..Thanks to the Iraq oil for food programme
He admitted that he used secret funds for his sons, relatives and friends but offered that if doing so was proved to be wrong he would pay back that amount from his own pocket. I am sorry Rehman Malik we dont have a book on such cases otherwise we could have proven you wrong. But would something on ethics, values and "stealing public money" help???or perhaps something on waking up your conscience?
PPP working hard in fight against terrorism !!!!
Corruption was the symbol of pride of PPP.....
Make him pay every single penny back. This was not his father's wealth but tax payers money. He can afford to pay now as he owns Marriott on edgeware road in London
