QAU launches its first BS programme

ISLAMABAD: Quaid-i-Azam University launched its first ever bachelor’s programme on Monday, 40 years after its establishment.

The ceremony was held at the University campus and attended by University Vice Chancellor Dr Masoom Yasinzai, a large number of faculty members.

Previously, the university had been offering master’s, MPhil and PhD programmes in various disciplines.

In the first phase, Bachelor’s in Economics has been introduced and in the next phase, Bachelor of Business Administration will be launched. The bachelor programmes will gradually extend to other disciplines. As many as 150 students have been given admission in the first batch.

An official of the University said that there would be no extra burden on the institute due to this new programme amid the financial crisis in educational institutions across the country. “The programme is quite cost effective, the existing faculty members and infrastructure will be used,” he said. He added that the growing demand by students for the bachelor’s programme would now be catered to.

“The BS programme is not a self-finance one and all the students have been admitted on merit and following the quota system,” he said.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, QAU Vice Chancellor Dr Masoom Yasinzai welcomed the newly enrolled students. He said that the Department of Economics had been launched soon after the establishment of the university.

“Keeping up the great tradition of being first in line, the department is proud to start the first ever BS programme of this university,” he added.

Dr Masoom said that he wanted to see this youth as a huge resource and the engine of economic growth for the country.

“I am an optimistic person and believe in my youth. They are the hope of this country and its future,” he said.  He claimed that excellence in teaching and research was Quaid-i-Azam University’s core business. He assured the students that they would get the best possible education as the currently faculty of economics comprised seven PhDs, four of whom had obtained their degrees from North America.

Director School of Economics Dr Tariq Javeed said that he had wanted to expand department of economics for quite some time now. He had been sharing this desire with every administration but had not received a fitting response until the encouragement and help of Dr Masoom.
