The K-P home ministry wrote to the Inspector General Police (IGP) of K-P asking him to keep records of internet cafe users and recommended the installation of hidden security cameras in these cafes.
This was done after the home ministry received reports of a rise in threatening emails regarding extortion and kidnapping for ransom in the province.
Owners of the internet cafes said that they do not have the required resources to install security cameras. After receiving data of internet cafes from the home ministry, the Police began an investigation into their activities.
On October 3, the Sindh government had decided to ban instant messaging and voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) clients Skype, Viber and other communication networks, possibly including Tango and WhatsApp, for three months in the province for security reasons.
Internet freedom groups and activists expressed anger and disbelief at the Sindh government’s proposal.

many cafes were shut down in Karachi in the past as they were being used for such activities. I remember some serious security issues in the past.
A day is gona come when this country will be banning us in every aspect of life
@unbelievable: Also he needs to get his finger print scanned, blood sample taken for DNA tests, retina scanned and there should be a one hour patriotism test to make sure he doesn't have any anti-state ideas. Finally if he fails any of these tests he goes straight to jail do not pass go!
Easy enough to have each user log in/out and take a photo of both user and his ID - cost nothing and should provide better info that expensive 24/7 security camera's.

Sarmad Hassan will be the first to apply for a cushy managerial position!
@JustSaying,
If you send an email from a cell phone, you can be tracked by the IMEI number of your hand set, in addition to that your SIM card can also be tracked
One can send an email from any cellphone with internet. No? besides, KP province does not even have a cybercrime wing! That is Federal government's domain. Pakistan entered this so called war against terrorism in 2001. Now it is 2013 and look at the level of preparedness in countering terrorism and crime. Just shows those who opted to get in the war had no long term planning or policy and entered for self serving purposes. Shame!
Keep a check om internet cafes but let the terrorists roam free and take people's lives, Pathetic.
Let's ban them too?
It is more relevant and much easier to keep check on Mosques, 24/7 these mullahs preach Jihad and extremism against other sects, other religions, and other countries, shouldn't they be stopped?
Just last month, Mufti Muneeb and many others called for persecution of Ahmadies, why was that accepted by the government and the society?
Its just an ostrich approach to check and ban emails, viber and facebook !
While I am all up for having open spaces with computers having high speed internet for general public use, business, urgent emailing / browsing use Or gaming centers where people enjoy multiplayer online experience. With so much commercialization and cheap bandwidth, if a person can't afford a computer and an internet connection at home, may be hes not supposed to have internet in first place. This idea of small cabins where teenagers would get together like creeps is just absurd and is not only ruining the society as general but is cause of major problems just as mentioned in the news story.
