The goods include biscuits, chocolates, auto parts, air conditioners, refrigerators and gas heaters among others.
The sales tax has also been levied on arms and ammunition, paints, batteries, lubricant oil, oven, gas heater, telephone set and irons.
A notification has been issued by the FBR in this regard.
The sales tax was increased to fulfill a key condition of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) $6.7 billion bailout programme.
A tax of 3% has also been levied on the import of fabrics, according to another notification issued by FBR.
On Thursday, the government had approved to sell 26% or more shares of 31 state-owned entities including Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) to fulfil another IMF condition.

@Pakistani: The answer to that question should be self-evident, no?
Tax properties and all the provinces would move into surplus.
@New Start: Incorrect. Completely incorrect. Please educate yourself about IMF, its owners, its purpose and the policies it enforces. Long story short, every interest-based debt will always result in poverty, unemployment and misery. The reason why people and economists don't realize it is because it is all clouded by complex mathematics, models, and useless gibberish. Have the insight! Educate yourself. IMF is under Bank of International Settlements. The aforementioned 2 bodies are privately owned and governed. They want profits. Debt system in its essence seeks to acquire more money than it is in a certain system. Which eventually leads to some people loosing the meals on their table. It might bring temporary relief, an illusion clouding the devastation that follows. For my people to know more, it's important they understand the menace of interest before Pakistan is no more. Rise Pakistan Rise!
@New Start:
Now if you go to any bank and ask for loan they will ask your Ways and Means to pay back or at least plan for saving and making money. Don't it give you the Idea Who is "Badnaming" foreign institution? You are right__ people who want to rob their people blind and keep them down low in the gutters to provide for their monstrous thirst for more and more wealth to lavish locally and in foreign banks!
The time has come to get out of homes people or at least remain steadfast to oppose this cruelity verbaly until this situation comes to boiling point and people fill the streets. I tell you the govt cant stand and will be packed sooner than they think.
When will my people come to the streets, drag these ruling scoundrels out from their castles and deny them and their kin life? Deny oxygen to them and their kin alike. Uproot the problem completely. It's about time Pakistanis, it is about time. Raise your voice as a nation, not under PTI, PMLN, PPP, PMLQ, MQM JUI-F etc. Raise your voice as Pakistanis, under the green and white flag. Overthrow these slaves of power and money. They are there only because of us! If we voted them up we can bring them down, very easily. After all it is the people amidst us who protect them in their castles :) Rise, rise, rise!
Why can't they tax agriculture land? What a shameless Govt.
clearly visible how they are controlling us. - still begging. :)
There is hardly any change for the people of Pakistan. The only change is that now Nawaz Sharif is filling his belly with inferno of ill gotten riches while the previous thieves need time & are out to settle their dishonestly acquired riches. The sufferings of people will continue in “DEMONCRACY”.
does anyone realize that the IMF is NOT the enemy here.. no one in the IMF wants to HARM anyone in Pakistan!!!..
They are looking at the financial situation in this country and finding ways to improve the financial situation and make the country financially stable..
Making counties which are in financial trouble.. is the JOB and the REASON for the IMF to exist..
The issue with Pakistan is that the IMF has to treat the Govt. here as someone would treat a 5 years old child who keeps disobeying what his elders are telling him..
Has PMLN done anything else other increasing taxes and pleasing IMF? It seems we are once again being ruled by East India Company.
I am sending 400,000 'kanch ke chooriaan' (glass bangles) to the people of four Provinces. The time has come to wear the. ET, I hope you print this for the sake of Pakistan.
Imagine QuaideAzam taking money from IMF and screwing poor with indirect tax.
The PML(N) Government presented its first budget in June 2013. Now at the begining of October, it has given a mini-budget.
There will be one more budget coming in as a new year gift at the begning of 2014 and then second annual budget in June 2014.
May Al-Mighty Allah rest our souls in peace. Ameen.
@ butt
read what you have posted and i quote again "Identify enterprises which need to be privatized ". OGDCL, Pakistan State Oil, National Bank surely "Need" to be privatised.
Gotta love Democracy!!!
@ali, which kind of poor eat biscuits, chocolates and use airconditioners, cars, fridges and heaters?
Perhaps Nawaz Sharif has decided to kill us all. If things continue to get expensive this way, sooner Pakistan will be the place only for Industrialists like Nawaz Sharif.
My friend, who happens to be a PMLN supporter still arguing that poor are exempted from tax price hike. As per him, only rich eat biscuits and sweets and use gas-heaters :D. With mentally handicapped people like him in our beloved country supporting this 'terrorism', who needs Taliban to destroy us?
This is pathetic....taxes on biscuits and chocolates..at least the children be spared from government's butchery.
Why couldn't this be done by the parliament? Why can't this be undone by the parliament?
Thank you PML-N. Breathing the (polluted) air is still tax free. Please do the needful for IMF.
more indirect taxes, more blood sucking of the poor. No taxes for the feudals and the industrialists.
Shair banooo shair...all the policies of Noon are only benefiting the elite class including top businessman of this country..the poor will get finished and the middle class will become poor...when I listen to there promises they made before elections..I can not stop banging my head on wall..
