Residents of Koraywala Colony in Multan caught a prayer leader on Sunday evening for plotting to rape and kill a three-year-old. He was beaten up, stripped and tied to an electricity pole before he was handed over to the Bahauddin Zakariya police. Police said he had confessed to his attempted assault.
The child was taken to a hospital, where she was later reported to be out of danger.
Investigation Officer Sheikh Mukhtar said that the girl and her brother were both students at a seminary in the neighbourhood. He said on Sunday their father had dropped them at the seminary for their daily Quran lessons.
After the lesson, he said, the cleric told her brother to return home saying that the girl had yet to revise her lesson and that he would drop her home in an hour.
When her brother left, the investigation officer said, the cleric drugged the girl and took her to a nearby graveyard, where he dug a hole for her.
He said a grave digger saw the cleric taking his clothes off. He said when he went closer, he saw the child. He said he grabbed the cleric and shouted for help. The grave digger told police that the cleric initially tried to put on the dress, but on seeing some other men approach, he left his clothes behind and fled.
He was caught at Kashmir Square, beaten up and tied to an electricity pole. Later, police were informed and the man was handed over to them.
The girl was taken to Nishtar Hospital emergency, where she was later said to be out of danger.
An FIR was registered with the girl’s father as the complainant. Police said the cleric’s assistant was missing and would be arrested soon.
The investigation officer said the cleric and told police that he had intended to rape the child. He said he had told his assistant to later bury her. He said he had told his assistant to dig a grave for an adult.
Several residents of the area gathered in front of the police station and demanded that the police seal all seminaries in the area. They said only mosques should be allowed to open. They said most of them would stop sending their children to seminaries and mosques. They demanded exemplary punishments for the suspect and his accomplice.
Boy accused of raping sister
Separately, a 16-year-old boy was arrested by Batala Colony police in Faisalabad and sent to district jail for allegedly raping his sister.
The Warispura resident was booked on his mother’s complaint. She told police that she had been away when her son raped his sister. She said some neighbours had rushed to her house on hearing her daughter shout. She said she learnt about it when she returned.
Investigation Officer Arshad Chattha told The Express Tribune that the boy had been sent to district jail for 14 days by a judicial magistrate.

@Hummm...., How would that prevent what almost happened to this 3 year old? Marrying a child would only make it legal for her so-called "husband" to rape and possibly kill her. That's not a solution.

The concerned cleric should be tied to an electricity pole and fired at. His dead body should remain hanged and let the birds eat his flesh. He deserves no leniency.
State should appoint prayer leaders and only licensed Moulvis should be allowed to lead prayers. Apart from the licensed Moulvis nobody should be allowed to keep beards. Only people with proper qualification and training can keep beards.
All mosques should open during the prayers time and otherwise should be closed for all the activities. If crime is committed by Moulvi then the punishment from him should twice as much of ordinary criminal for the same crime.
Lastly, parents should be held responsible for sending their children to Molvis or doing any other business with Moulvis.

1- Separate institutions for men and women CAN NOT protect children form sexual abuse because is news/reports/statistics are to be believed boys have been raped by men and girls are molested by women.
Parents should protect their children and take whatever means necessary to do that.
2- Any man/woman accused of using religious garb and harming the society should have a stronger and more serious legal penalty. These de-facers of humanity and religion must be dealt with much more strongly than others. This man and all other such religious clerics/prayer imams/spiritual healers/ spiritual leaders/the man who accused a child of blasphemy and all others who have harmed a person (man/woman or child) harm not just one human being, not just that one person's family but the entire country and the society.

There is one another thing very common these days alongside cable.. religiosity. According to your logic, should not religiosity be blamed alongside cable for proliferation of such heinous crimes?
In a fractured society where the prayer leaders are taught and brought up in deplorable living conditions (madrssahs) and have to survive on charity and left overs of the affluent. Such incidents should not come as a surprise. In our society the child considered to be unfit for schooling is sent to madrssahs and the one who's parents cannot afford looking after their lot are also sent for such learning. So the deprived upbringing of such children result in terrorism raw material and sexual crime perpetrators. With no others prospect of future for such madrssahs graduates. I believe the whole society has to be blamed for their wrong doings.

I hope people realize 'cleric' and 'prayer leader' (or imam) are not the same thing and that an imam actually can be anyone and doesn't hold actual religious authority. Imam, in Arabic, just means to 'be in front of' or 'lead'. Just a clarification.
shazia is right, all these behaviours have increased in proportions due to the easy access to dish, cables and the internet. In addition to this glamour has also contributed towards it. The above in addition to the easily accessible cheap calls have corrupted our teens. These are also seen as resentment by others, causing them to do such heneous crimes.
