Some 60 extremists chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" as Rowhani's motorcade drew out of Tehran's Mehrabad Airport.
But they were outnumbered by 200 to 300 supporters of the president who shouted: "Thank you Rowhani."
A small police contingent separated the rival demonstrators.
The shoe missed the car and Rowhani stood up through the sunroof to acknowledge the crowds.
Before leaving New York where he attended the UN General Assembly, Rowhani had a 15-minute telephone conversation with Obama on Friday, the first contact between leaders of the two countries in more than three decades.

congratu;lations iran...so happy for your people. well done presidents!
For people who are criticising the talks between the two leaders should realize that mere talking to some one does not symbolize cowardice but on the contrary it takes courage to talk to someone diplomatically keeping your own stance clear and listening to the other, that is what politics and diplomacy is all about, and that is surely an act of bravery. Wonderful job Mr Rouhani and great work Mr. Obama.
@scotchpak: But get free money from them and live longer?
So what happened to Iran's "dhileri" and "bahaduri"? Moral of the story: In the end, everybody has to bow to America.
Politics everywhere!!!
@Ch. Allah Daad:
Indeed we are. Mr. Rouhani’s articles on Washington Post and NY Times was one of the most sensible article in this decade from any leader. True sign of leadership philosophy, a man who clearly believes that humanity can prosper and live peaceful.
For every good deed there is opposition from those who flourish by inflicting misery on others. Human race is funny that way.
After a long time, we are witnessing a sensible leadership in Iran.
The muslim world is too eager for "Death to America" by chanting slogans, instead of flourishing themselves.
A 15 min call is better than boots on the ground or loss of lives. In a related news sale of antacids went up in KSA, Qatar and Israel.
