KARACHI: This is in reference to your editorial “Dress modestly, please” (September 27). I was shocked to read the piece, topped by an inane and repulsive cartoon, both making fun of a dress code enforcement at NUST. Decency is a virtue that is valued not only by Islam (which is, perhaps, an anathema to some self-proclaimed progressives) but has also been praised and practised in almost all societies, until about a century ago. It encompasses at least three aspects: dressing decently, speaking decently and behaving decently. And surely education doesn’t just mean imparting textbook information, but rather an overall value addition to one’s personality. Finally, in response to your question of “what is deemed decent”, the answer is very simple. A decent dress is a sufficiently loose dress which covers up and hides the natural curves of a human body, whether male or female.
In conclusion, I would like to compliment and commend the NUST authorities for trying to nurture a culture of decency among its students.
