PIA will add 16 weekly services to cities like Toronto, Manchester, Birmingham and Dubai as part of its initiative to use limited aircraft on profitable routes and rollback operations from loss-making destinations, PIA Managing Director Captain Junaid Yunus told a press conference.
It has also decided to give a tough time to domestic competitors as it starts operating nine additional flights between Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore and Quetta from next month.
Yunus, who remained composed throughout the press conference despite facing stringent questions, insisted PIA's main problem was lack of revenues.
"The entire PIA problem is that of (lower) revenues. If we are able to shore up sales, then we will breakeven in a year," he said. "We needed aircraft for that and unfortunately there have been delays."
About the high number of employees, he said salaries were not a substantial part of cost. "In the next five years, many of them will retire and we estimate the strength will reduce to 12,000 to 13,000."
Currently, PIA has 16,600 employees on its payroll with additional 2,700 working on contractual basis.
But the measure for the proposed turnaround of PIA comes at a time when the government has announced its intentions to privatise the national carrier.
In a speech broadcast last week, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif described financially troubled state-owned enterprises including PIA as a drain on taxpayers' money.
"I am not challenging the government's decision in any way," said Yunus, who was appointed last year. "All I am saying is that we realise that PIA cannot continue to eat up Rs3 billion a month from national exchequer and we are trying to fix that problem on our own."
PIA has set a target to increase revenue by additional Rs1.5 billion from these additional flights. Out of the 38 aircraft in its fleet, it has 26 operational planes.
Yunus said the engineering department has been able to make eight A-310 aircraft serviceable while another one is being worked upon.
"We have fought really hard for the aircraft. As a matter of fact, the highest number of tenders have been issued in my tenure," he said.
In the last couple of months, the airline made nine attempts to lease aircraft that were all interrupted because of political or other reasons.
"Nevertheless, we are going ahead with our plans to induct 14 aircrafts by 2014. The government has given us only Rs3 billion for this. We are talking with banks to raise the rest," said Yunus.
Successive governments have dripped-fed PIA with funds from national coffers, which were siphoned off in payments to vendors and interest payments as soon as money came.
Last capital injection of $160 million came under the government of former president Pervez Musharraf that was used to lease B-777s and A-310s.
Yunus said the airline was looking at cutting cost and adopting zero-tolerance policy against indiscipline. From Rs45.27 per gallon in 2002, jet fuel price surged to Rs298 in 2012. Over 56% of PIA's revenues are eaten up in fuel cost.
Learning from Malaysia Airlines
The famed Idris Jala, the person responsible for the turnaround of Malaysia Airlines and the airliner’s CEO, who met PIA officials a few days back must have left an impression on Junaid Yunus.
"Jala used to evaluate profits of all the routes individually. The ones in loss were shut down. That's what we are doing now as we constantly analyse the network. Some stations have already been shut and staff called back."
PIA has stopped flights to Chicago, Frankfurt-Amsterdam, Kandahar and Zahedan, which were bleeding because of low passenger traffic. PIA operates to 33 international destinations.
Being the national airline, it operates to Chitral, Gilgit, Dera Ismail Khan and Turbat, which altogether cost it between Rs200 million and Rs300 million every year.

You wouldnt expect a turkey to vote for Christmas now would you!!
We all know what the problem with the Airline is. Its pretty simple, restructure and lay off more than half the employees. I mean why do we keep bailing the idiots out time and time again. Its gross mismanagement just like PSM and other state owned companies where people get paid to do nothing. Come on PM just sort out the country and dont let them stall you. Make an executive decision NOW!
16,600 employees plus 2,700 on interim contracts? this is what politicians have done to airline which once used to be a global leader in international airlines. and i surprised at how the MD PIA says we learned from Malaysian CEO to reduce costs duh even air hostess can tell you that sir!
Corrupt parasites in PIA, PSM, PR etc. oppose privatization so they can continue sucking the blood of these "organizations' and we the ordianry citizens through taxes pay Rs. 500 billion for their corruption. Corruption party waderas are on the forefront of opposing the privatization
sell this corrupt organization as soon as possible and save our money from going down in this filthy drain......
Well the whole nation seems to cry about over staffing in PIA as compared to international airlines of the west but few people know that salaries of PIA employees are far less compared to these western airlines. Moreover salary expense constitutes of just 16% of the total PIA expense while a hefty 42% is spent on just fuel expense. This combined with mantainence and repair for this this ageing fleet of PIA whose average age is more then 23 years cost a fortune. Furthermore pathetic frequency number to many routes and non existence of flights to destinations where large number of Pakistanis live add to the loss.
PML(N) Philosophy Porblem - Country is not running good Solution - PRIVATIZE IT
When you fly to places like Chicago just twice a week from Karachi and that too via Lahore and Barcelona, an airline would bleed revenue! An aircraft burns barrel loads of jet fuel while taking off and attains maximum fuel consumption at cruising altitude. So it does not come as surprise that PIA bled money when it takes off three times just to get to Chicago.
Furthermore, Illinois, Michigan and Indiana has a sizable Pakistani diaspora and with Chicago being in the center of it, PIA could mint money by flying a daily non-stop service between Chicago, Karachi and Lahore. Alas, the marketing department of PIA just consists of knuckleheads who have turned PIA into a Bus Service flying to its final destination after transiting between two or three cities. Heck, even Daewoo Express Bus Service runs non stop point-to-point services now!
Too little too late...and the part about Malaysian Airline CEO laughable, any business graduate from a decent university could have told him this...
As for making more money thru privatization after fixing is again a lie, this has been promised many times by the PIA management and unions in the past and nothing has ever come of it...what has happened is that over 120 Billion PKR has been spent to keep these guys in comforts money that could have been better spent on schools, hospitals, roads, police, courts etc...
you know things that would actually make the lives of Pakistani's better.
Just for the attention of PIA managers/board/Staff whoever, there is a PIA plane parked at Muscat Airport deserted corner since last 6 months !!
(this plane had an accident at Muscat while landing damaging its landing gear, since then the sorry faced plane is parked here without any attention)
Open up the Shares for public to buy. Stock Options to be given to employees of PIA with a ceiling, say upto 100% of annual salary value can be purchased under stock options the first year on float and then to buy at the face value of the Shares, after that any appreciation benefits goes to the employees on their investment; Public buys shares from open market and invests for profits; All will benefit by floating in open market and only performance will generate premium; This way PIA will generate cash and employees will benefit too; Board of Directors run the Company with only one mission; commercial viability selected routes making profitable returns; No political routes which lose money; Security and engineering maintenance to be subcontracted for benefit to passengers and this will increase revenue passengers loads as then PIA will be known for being a secure airline with safety as prime objective; Employees whose points scored on productivity, efficiency and courtesy shall be promoted, trained for enhancing their skills in other disciplines, to grow with the airline growth; Let this be a benchmark and an example for other giant behemoths of government organizations;
PIA management again shows its competence. By adding flights you don't cut down costs and add profits. You need to cut down your useless manpower, improve service, better maintenance and streamline your operations.
EMIRATES was launched in October 1985 by leasing 2 aircrafts (1 each Boeing 737 and Airbus A300) from PIA. Our national carrier not only provided them with planes, but cabin crew and ground staff, who were the basis of what is now worlds number 1 airline. Today Emirates has fleet of 194 aircrafts, with total capacity of 71000 passengers, flying to 130 destinations worldwide. Click on the link for details. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emirates_fleet
Purpose of giving these details is to compare their performance with ours, and ponder upon the reasons as to why a company started by our experience has climbed up to no. 1 spot and we dropped to 117th place. One obvious reason amongst many others is to operate a commercial organization on professionalism and non-political basis.
PIA has been overfilled with corrupt parasites during the reign of corruption party who are resisting every effort to get the airline privatized so we are rid of paying through our nose for the corruption of these parasites
Privatization is the easiest solution. Have you thought where other 10,000 employees will go. Dear industry is down no one is going to hire them. actually most of the people are jealous of not getting a chance to serve in this prestigious corporation. So stop being jealous and help PIA get new planes so it could generate the revenue for its employees.
PIA has bigger than an elephant size problem. How do you eat an elephant? Simple. One bite at a time.
Improve QUALITY & EFFICIENCY of all work and processes. Reward INDIVIDUAL performance. Reward TEAM performance. Reward DEPARTMENT performance. Then see and measure results. Identify and attach one worst problem at a time. Bring pride in all PIA workers, employees.
No body have seen mismanagement of PIA”s as I have seen when I was in Canada. All the western routes are paid premiums price to PIA by the Pakistani’s. Many ways the employee manipulated the reservation and are filled with the free B’s, overloaded luggage are unpaid thru the recommendations (In USA the all American carriers no free hand bag or any luggage and they made billion of Dollars in profit).
How the thing will straight in I Pakistan? I have no hope
I am an Indian and I feel both the Indian and Pakistani goverents have no business running a airline In today's highly professional and competitive industry. Times have changed since the governments started these airlines. The they were the only ones allowed in the business and operated more as a service to the nation(albeita loss making one). But today people prefer the more professionally managed private airlines and the government run airlines have outlived their purpose. The two governments should focus their energies on health education and public safety which are areas screaming for attention
For those countrymen, who r in favour of privatization. This govt. Is not intrested to make this airline profitable by privatizing it... But they r much more intrested to buy roosvelt hotels of newyork and other assets on very cheap rates to private investors I.e Mian mansha,Arif habib etc...It worth nearly $1 bn now... How fool we r that majority of us r keen to hand over these assets for few million dollars.. plz stop this non sense by privatizing it... Make it profitable by giving honest managment and newer fuel efficient aircrafts.. and what a shame for those who continuously criticizing and hating our own airline... Which airline in this world offers free of costs transportation of dead bodies of Pakistani nationals from its network to Pakistan?... There r many more positive benefits of our national flag career as this is just one example for our own airline haters.
U can't even buy tickets online any more I live in Europe and getting a ticket I have to call an agent in NYC and he does it for me!!!
You have already done "alot" now please shut up & let this government sell this corrupt institute.
Why now ?
PIA most definitely needs to be privatized. in all my years of traveling, today was the worst experience with PIA; the flight got delayed by 6 hours, the staff was not trained at all, the plane was faulty, engineer wasn't available, there was no 'complain resolution desk' in Lahore or Dubai. Moreover, the people in charge were rude, and not at all helpful. PIA needs to return to its old glorious days and it can only be done when privatized. Look at how well PTCL did when it was privatized.
As expected. the corrupt management of PIA wants to hold on and keep on bleeding it. Govenrments have no business running airlines and should focus on running the country. The sooner the airline is privatized the better. Of course a good step prior to privatization would be to ban all the unions in PIA.
PIA has 18,700 employees and its monthly loss is 3 Billion Rupees per Month! That loss is then charged from the national exchequer. That means for every employee of PIA, Rs. 160,427.00 rupees is paid for by the public tax money for such pathetic service. Only closing down PIA will save the government 36 Billion Rupees per year! That is equal to the total health budget of Punjab.
I'd say just sack all the employees of PIA, privatize it and just get rid of it. Its only eating away our resources.
The problem is that no one wants to fly PIA unless they have to. They offer a medicore product.
I am not flying PIA come what may.....The planes are in bad shape and can fall anytime from sky.
Also, I am not willing to pay for PPP or PML-N workers through my TAXES.........Privatize all of it......It's dead meat.....If a private party can make money out of it, good for him/her.
Too little too late!
if newly opened RAK airline can take passengers to Lahore for AED 250/Head with 30+7KG weight and hot meals (a 3 hour flight) , how come you can't do that??
Last capital injection of $160 million came under the government of former president Pervez Musharraf that was used to lease B-777s and A-310s.
Democracy didn't pay anything after that?
The major issue to be addressed is corruption and political interference. The airline will be up and about if these two issues are dealt with honestly!
People of Pakistan is sick n tired now for bailing out failing state owned fat cows. If I recollect correctly it is the 10th bailout that have been given now.
Either PIA & SMill should made their employee roll half next month or they must be privatized.
Enough is Enough Now.
regards,
A person who is managing his personal assets very efficiently and they are growing each day. But can not manage state assets is totally incompetent person. He is not even a manager what to talk about leadership?
So you know what to and you were not doing it... itz a crime
PIA should be privatized ASAP. Tax payer money should not be used to pay salaries of politically appointed PIA staff.
Too late! Spend the money on education, health, security.......... Let the new owners make these pencil pushers work hard for their money.
What MD PIA said makes sense. What government will receive by selling P I A in its current state. Peanuts. If it is made profitable by Iinvesting few hundred million dollars for leasing new planes than it can be privatised in two to three years for billion dollars.
offcourse they will fight back, coz non of the PIA employee wants to loose the luxury PIA provides to their employees ! they will loose all the "Free" stuff they get along with the benefits they get from PIA....
PIA employees have a huge part in drowning this airline !
And if he learnt this basic method of cost saving in the Airline Industry from Malaysian Airlines CEO then he's not a good CEO to start with.
JAAHIL QOUM!!!
What exactly was he doing all this time?
Good effort by this guy Junaid Younous to make things right but unfortunately too much water has flown under the bridge now. Govt should move at Godspeed to privatize PIA. The labour unions will go back to their laziness once the pressure of privatisation goes away, this is just a temporary drama.
Airlines should average 100 employees per aircraft (or 150 max). With 30 serviceable aircrafts the total number of employees should be less than 4500. 12,000 or 13,000 is still way too big a burden on the national exchequer which is why privatization is the best route. The new management under new owners would look for profit maximization and fire unnecessary "jiyalas".
