No suitors: Five sisters jump into river, four die

Their father said his daughters told him they were going to the syphon, a popular picnic point, for recreation.

VEHARI: Five sisters jumped into Sutlej River near Mailsi siphon. One was saved while four perished in an apparent act of mass suicide. “The girls were dejected over not getting any marriage proposals,” their father Bashir Ahmed told the authorities. According to police, five women namely Zeenat Bibi 45, Muniran Bibi, 40, Fiaz Bibi, 35, Kamun Bibi, 28, and Nazia Bibi, 25, daughters of Bashir Ahmed, residents of Chah Hanblewala Kehror Pakka jumped into Sutlej. One of the women namely Kamun Bibi was pulled out alive from the river by local divers and police while search for other four was in progress. Their father said his daughters told him they were going to the syphon, a popular picnic point, for recreation.
