KARACHI: The Pakistan junior hockey team left for Malaysia last night aiming to win the third edition of the Sultan of Johor Cup that begins this weekend in Johor Bahru.

The tournament that will be held from September 22 to 29 also includes India, South Korea, Great Britain and Argentina while the hosts will defend their title.

Former Olympian Manzoorul Hasan, who replaced Rana Mujahid as the team’s head coach and manager, said the team has its eyes on the title.

“It’s a balanced squad that also has players with international experience at the senior level,” the former Olympian said ahead of the departure. “It’s a competitive tournament with tough sides.”

Pakistan will open their campaign with a game against South Korea on September 22 and then meet England the following day.

After a day’s break, the colts will take on traditional arch-rivals India and hosts Malaysia on September 25 and 26 respectively before playing Argentina on September 28.

Captain Umar Bhutta said his team has worked on their flaws exposed during the tour of Europe. “Every team is tough and we will play every game like a final,” he said.
