The mosquito-borne virus has killed 12 people in the valley since August 19 and the number of patients is increasing every day, doctors said.
Dengue is spread by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water and usually bite people during the daytime. It causes high fever, severe joint and muscle pains and can be fatal.
"So far 12 people have died due this disease and 4,934 persons have been tested positive, we have declared a health emergency in the district," doctor Abdul Khaliq, district health officer in Swat told AFP by telephone.
Khaliq said the outbreak has been declared as an epidemic.
"It is becoming dangerous. Dengue larvae is everywhere, in and outside houses, in streets and all other places," Khaliq said.
Officials said they believed infected larvae had been brought from Lahore in water in a consignment of old tyres.
An outbreak in Lahore in September 2011 killed 120 people and infected more than 1,200.
Hospitals in Mingora, the main town in Swat, are struggling to cope with the influx of patients, who complained of a lack of health facilities and basic medicines.
"We have not enough beds, no medicines and sometimes we go outside to have blood tests in private laboratories," Hamid Khan, a relative of one patient, told AFP.
"My brother had fever and we are worried because the blood test was positive."
There is no specific treatment for dengue but proper medical care for severe cases greatly reduces the risk of death, according to the World Health Organization.
Officials in Mingora's main Saidu Sharif hospital said that a special 100-bed ward has been set up to deal with dengue cases.

@QB: I am taking every possible measures against dengue. I told all mosquitoes to go away otherwise I will call for countrywide rallies, dharna. They must be send by PML N, CJ, EC, media .... IK
@Adnan Siddiqi: Yes,in delhi 2006,I can recall,it was like an epidemic.Blood bank was almost empty .About preparation,people should take precaution on personal level.Use mosquito coils or be inside in mosquito net..That was instructed.Govt did it best to maintain proper sanitation.There was a campaign launched to aware people about dengue.AC and Coolers r your nearest source for dengue.Water log is responsible cause.Yes, I m not an isolated case.
@Adnan Siddiqi: Sorry,I m an Indian and dengue is also present in India now a days.
@terryjonesindia:
Glad to know that you achieved swift recovery. May I ask if your's was an isolated case or there was an epidemic of sorts as witnessed in big cities of Karachi during the monsoon season. Also, how prepared was the government and municipal authorities and how effective were their preventive measures to fight off this menace.
being a PTI supporter, I am really only interested in what is going on in KPK. I don't really care nor do I have any hopes from any of the other provincial governments or the federal govt for that matter. I do find it quite amusing that on all the news on tribune on KPK there is an abundance of non PTI supporters just criticizing the heck away, blaming IK and PTI for the most ridiculous things. It just means...that these people really have no hopes from their/other govts and hope that PTI fails as well so they don't feel like such failures. To those people I would say: Don't hold your breath...You will be disappointed. PTI in its three months has been taking revolutionary steps and prospects of them succeeding are extremely high
Coming to this article: Strict measures must be taken and maybe the govt should think about quarantine. We can't afford to let this menace spread anymore than it already has. Hope things are under control soon.
@Kaleem:Then perhaps you have not seen extreme cases of dengue.It reaches to extreme level when people start vomiting blood,and blood comes through ear and nose.I admitted myself to apolo coz i didnt wanna risk my life. They simply cured me by putting on juice and coconuts.
@QB:
I was expecting such a lame comeback. Please correct me if I am wrong here but wasn't it IK who used to hold his arms high and cry vociferously that he has the best team in town which is abreast with each and every problem plaguing this country and if given a chance, it would eradicate every ill from our country within 9,19 and 90 days? Besides, how long does a government need to be in power before it can arrange such basic stuff as life saving medicines, hospital beds and blood tests?
People of KPK are already regretting that infamous day when they ended up voting in a tea-cum-internet-party into power which has been bickering over CM travelling in helicopters, the ruling party making each and every treasury member a parliamentary secretary and dual offices of government and party.
I know IK would dismount from the high moral horse he is supposedly sitting on but Shahbaz Sharif did his best to eradicated Dengue from Punjab and has an impressive infrastructure in place now. IK should ask for SS's help.
@Adnan Siddiqi:
Dengue precautions need to be taken well in advance. PTI has been in government for only about 3 months, so you can't blame it on them. However, if this happens in the following years and government doesn't implement any preventative measures then you can blame the government.
Please stop political bickering over this important issue and write something productive --- if you have any.
May Allah cure people who are suffering from dengue. Someone called others "Dengue Brothers" when this disease broke out in Lahore, now should we call him "Dengue Khan"? Cheap political point scoring should not have been played on this calamity.
@terryjonesindia: That must be extreme level of it, or may be something else. Hope you have fully recovered.
and someone used to call someone "Dengue brothers" Nature has its own way.
What goes around comes around. What happened IK, cat got your tongue now? Demand a swift resignation from CM Parvez Khattak as you used to do from Shahbaz Sharif.
This dengue thing is too dangerous.I was suffering from it just 1 month back.In initial stage only ,blood started coming through urine.It cost me around more than 1 lakh INR to recover from this disease.
