RAWALPINDI: This is with reference to the editorial “Punishment well-deserved” (October 8) written in the backdrop of Faisal Shahzad’s conviction. The tendency to blame mosques and madrassas for producing suicide bombers and militants shows an illiberal mindset and is in fact contradicted by Shahzad’s profile and education. The root cause of militancy and extremism is the double standard of the west, in particular America, and their policies on issues dear to the Muslim world such as Palestine and Kashmir. Why is this often left out of analyses on how and why we have people like Dr Aafia Siddiqui and Faisal Shahzad in our midst.
