Certainly, this is what seems to be happening now. Following the call by an All Parties Conference to pursue a course of dialogue to solve security issues, the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has put out a set of demands which include a troop withdrawal from tribal areas and the release of all Taliban prisoners. At the same time they seem to be bent on continuing their war against the state. Dealing with a force that speaks from a perceived position of strength by accepting any of its terms or even hinting this could happen would be a disaster; quite possibly a fatal one. No state can afford to allow itself to be weakened in this fashion.
General Kayani, whose primary role, of course, is to defend the nation, has done well to speak out forcefully. His words act as a reminder of the act of folly that political players may have been moving towards. Any talks with terrorists must take place from a powerful position; the government must not appear to be cowering before them — and the army chief’s expression of a full readiness to take them on is reassuring given the developments of the past few days and the farcical terms put down by the TTP for talks, which more and more people of rationality believe it would be foolish to attempt to pursue, at least, at the present point in time.

Time to act instead of giving strong statements. If any politician or party opposes military action they should be banned and apprehended as they are acting antistate at this time. Imran khan has aligned himself with extremists and terrorists as recently alqaida terrorist has been nabbed from jamaat islami student wing from hostel of Punjab university. So called Jamaat Islami should have been banned long time ago as it is using religion for political gains. JI is is antipakistan and antiislam.
@Disgusted: To me US presence ensures checks and balances.
Before mega public surrender in 1971 in Dacca (Dhaka), Pakistan Army Generals said many strong words too.
@Rabbani, Don't call them Islamic Militants, their terrorist acts have nothing to do with Islam, they are nothing but Savages hiding under the banner of Islam, rather they are the enemies of Islam.
The only good taliban is a dead taliban...
Here's a "heads up" - the Taliban have been very successful in coercing/intimidating the govt and talking tough has never intimidated the Taliban. Not sure how the Editor can congratulate a General who has been an object failure in the fight with Terrorist.
As long as Army is not defamed, everything is okay, not as if the general has ever made any wrong moves.
The nation stands with the Armed Forces of Pakistan in eliminating these "Islamic" militants from the face of Earth, no matter what it takes. Pakistan Zindabad.
Lasting peace can never be achieved if the route to it is through violence. That is the simple law of nature. What Gen. Kayani said about the consequences of Sunday’s attack that killed Major General Sanaullah and two other army officers should not come as a surprise. This enemy has been killing with impunity. They do not differentiate between civilians and the security forces, their ideology is to kill and destroy. That is the reason we have seen over 40,000 deaths at the hands of these terrorists. Even today the TTP came out with the statement that they will continue to wage war against the government troops. They have made the stance of elected politicians who have pledged to start a dialogue with these terrorists very difficult. Peace is a two way street. It can only be achieved by the terrorist giving up their agenda of death and destruction, and joining the main stream public in building the nation. Taliban has lost credibility with the people of the region. The overwhelming majority has already rejected terrorism and look forward to peace. It is time the terrorists realize this, and avail the chance they have to become a part of the mainstream nation builders. Or they will be alienated and left in dark with no support from the peace loving masses of the region.

General Kayani is a brave, and truthful man with protection of nation and its citizens his priority. Musharraf speaks highly of him in his book, and chose a worthy man to take charge of armed forces.Country should stand behind him on his position. Off course, Ik wants him gone so that he could help put a protaliban person as COAS.
Well said General. . We are proud of our forces. Pakistan could have done wonders if it has the brave Govt. like its forces.
