The current domestic champions will become the second Pakistan team after Sialkot Stallions to feature in the lucrative tournament. Stallions led by Shoaib Malik failed to qualify for the main round in the last edition.
Wolves’ lead-up to the event has not been encouraging as after receiving their visas for Mohali only at the eleventh hour, the Misbahul Haq-led side had to face embarrassment after reaching Chandigarh.
The team was confined to the PCA Stadium vicinity in Mohali on the first day of their stay as they did not have the visa for adjacent Chandigarh where the rest of the visitors have been accommodated.
The matter was unresolved till yesterday morning, but the Pakistan Cricket Board’s spokesperson confirmed that the matter was later settled and the team was to be shifted to the Chandigarh hotel by yesterday evening. “The matter is settled and the team is focused on today’s game,” the official told The Express Tribune.
“They opted not to play the practice game and preferred nets on the eve of their opening match.”
He also confirmed that the captain, along with Saeed Ajmal and Ehsan Adil, reached New Delhi and was expected to join the team by the evening.
Volts, New Zealand’s domestic side, consist of various international players including Brendon McCullum. The team is led by Derek de Boorder.
While Wolves will be making their debut, Volts have featured in various qualifying events since 2009 but are yet to make an entry into the main competition.
Wolves’ coach Naved Anjum had said his team assessed the qualities of all the opposition and was upbeat about its chances. “We’ve trained for weeks,” said the coach. “We are hopeful of good results.”
