ISLAMABAD:

The parliamentary committee on judges’ appointment unanimously approved on Friday the nomination of Justice Mushir Alam, as judge of the Supreme Court.

Justice Mushir Alam was working as Chief Justice of Sindh High Court (SHC). Justice Maqbool Baqar, the senior most judge of SHC, will be the top judge of Sindh. He was recently injured in a terrorist attack in Karachi.

The committee for judges’ appointment, headed by Raja Zafarul Haq, also recommended making permanent six additional judges of the Lahore High Court. These include justices Abdul Sami Khan, Abdur Rahman, Shujaat Ali Khan, Aisha A Malik, Shahid Waheed and Ali Baqir Najfi.

The committee expressed satisfaction with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) reports submitted on the judges’ assets. The committee for appointing judges of higher courts was reconstituted last month after the change of government following the May 11 general elections.

Senator Raza Rabbani of Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians recently resigned from membership of the committee when it was decided that PML-N Senator Raja Zafar-ul-Haq would head the committee. Farooq H Naek replaced Senator Rabbani in the committee.

Senator Haji Muhammad Adeel of Awami National Party, PML-N Senator Malik Rafiq Rajwana, PML-N MNAs Mehmood Bashir Virk and Arshad Leghari, PPP’s Naveed Qamar and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Shah Mahmood Qureshi were included in the parliamentary committee.
