Loopholes in education system : ‘6,000 govt schools not functioning’

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court was informed on Thursday that more than 6,000 government schools across the province were not functioning. This was stated in a consolidated report based on inspections of the government schools conducted by the district and session judges in the 27 districts of the province on the orders of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Of the total 48,227 government schools, around 42,832 are fully functional, showed the report submitted by the SHC Registrar. Around 4,540 are non-functional and 2,181 are “ghost” schools, while the land of 524 schools have illegally been encroached upon, the report reflected. In Karachi, 34 government schools are non-functional, 72 are ghost schools and 20 are under illegal encroachment. The bench directed the provincial law officer, Miran Muhammad Shah, to ascertain as to what further orders had been passed by the apex court in this regard and submit a report in 15 days.
