LAHORE: The Lahore High Court chief justice on Monday gave the Punjab government a “final opportunity” to submit a date for when the local government elections would take place. Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, hearing a petition filed by Local Councils Association of Punjab (LCAP) President Syed Asghar Shah Gillani in 2010, said that the case had been pending for almost three years, but the government had yet to set a date. A lawyer representing the government told the court that the Punjab Local Government Bill of 2013 had just been passed by the provincial legislature and would soon be enforced. He said the government would announce the date of the election after the new law is enforced. The chief justice adjourned the hearing till September 25 and directed the government counsel to supply a date for the polls. The petitioner had asked the court to direct the provincial government to hold the local elections.
