DI KHAN:

Despite security being on high alert after the DI Khan jailbreak on July 29, there were successive hand grenade attacks on the police in Kutchery area on Wednesday.

The first blast occurred near the residence of SSP Investigations, while the second grenade was hurled at his office but fortunately it did not explode, a senior police official told The Express Tribune.

Although no human casualties were reported, the door of a nearby mosque located near the SSP’s residence was damaged.

As per initial investigations, the hand grenades were hurled by unidentified motorcyclists after evening prayers.

Meanwhile, the bomb disposal squad (BDS) also defused a 12-kilogramme explosive device connected to a cell phone in Kutchery Chowk, which is at a short distance from the DPO’s office.

“The mobile IED was defused by firing as we do not have people equipped to defuse explosives. A total of 14 shots were fired at the device kept inside a water bucket,” said BDS in-charge Inayat
Khan Tigar.

Police officials confirmed there was information about the attacks from intelligence sources. Items including two detonators and a battery were found along with the defused bomb. An FIR has been registered against unidentified attackers.

Earlier in  July, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan militants attacked the DI Khan Central Jail and managed to free nearly 250 inmates, including 48 high-profile militants. Some of these prisoners were recaptured within days of the brazen attack.

The area has been on high-alert since the assault.
