Unidentified gunmen opened fire on the couple shooting Captain Nadeem in the neck. The same bullet that killed him landed in his wife’s shoulder, wounding her.
"Two gunmen riding a motorbike intercepted Captain Nadeem's vehicle and opened fire, killing him on the spot," police official Tahir Naveed told AFP.
Nadeem's wife was taken to a naval hospital, he added. Her condition is stable, Express News reported.
Nadeem taught at the Karachi campus of the National University of Sciences and Technology.
A naval intelligence official also confirmed the killing.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Taliban militants raided a naval base in the city in May 2011, destroying two P-3C Orion surveillance planes and killing 10 personnel in a 17-hour assault.
Violence
Targeted killings continue despite the prime minister’s arrival in the city on Tuesday to discuss the issue of unabated violence.
Earlier today, a ranger official and three suspected criminals were killed in an exchange of fire in Lyari.
While on September 3, police sources reported that a police inspector, a political worker and an alleged gangster were among 11 people shot dead across the city.
In the first six months of 2013, 1,726 people were killed compared with a previous high of 1,215 in the same period last year, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is currently in Karachi for talks with political parties designed to come up with a strategy to improve the worsening law and order situation in the city.

@farhan: Out of curiosity, I Googled for Capt Syed Nadeem Naqvi and guess what I found. A number of websites had this (incorrect) news that Pakistan Navy Shia officer Captain Syed Nadeem Naqvi was killed in Karachi. And there was one thing common; all are Indian websites. One of them is PTI website - Press Trust of India! And they even went on to claim that his wife's name is Binte Zehra! How could a British lady be named Binte Zehra?! Bottom line; don't believe everything you read on internet!
I am very saddened to hear this news. I had the honour of meeting captain Dr Nadeem, he was a brilliant man. I am only confused by his wife I understood she was British not Swedish
And non of them were Shia right? Personal association doesn't mean that you keep distorting facts. Anyways, my point is that the brutal killings of outright officers at the hands of extremists eventually cause loss to the country.
@Farhan: What do YOU know about these guys? Let me help you correct your facts. The correct names are Capt Dr Nadeem Ahmed, Lt Cdr Azeem Haider and Lt Cdr Asif Hussain Kazmi. Personal association is more credible than Google.
@bhai log: Inside job? That must be the most illogical Conspiracy Theory anybody could cook! Shame on people who liked ur comment. @ET: Good to see that you removed the other comment that wasn't in right spirit. What about this one? Does freedom of expression mean that people say any silly thing that comes to their mind? Pls do post this comment. You've ignored a lot of my comments; let this be posted.
@Farhan: I think my past 2 decades of association with two of the guys is far more authentic than your Google. Correct the names; Capt Dr Nadeem Ahmed, Lt Cdr Azeem Haider and Lt Cdr Asif Hussain Kazmi. And what made you assume that 'my type of people paint a happy picture'?
@Farhan: His name was Captain Nadeem Ahmed, not Syed Nadeem Naqvi! Get your facts straight!
Really feeling very sorry at the sad demise of Captain Dr. Nadeem. I met him a year ago. A thorough gentlemen who wanted to work for his country.A learned scholar and an enthusiastic researcher. A big loss for NAVY, NUST and this country. May his soul rest in peace.
@Saddened. Yea enough of people of your type who would love to paint happy picture and would brush aside the problems. Just search over the net why Captain Syed Nadeem Naqvi has been killed and who was he and you would come to know. And also search about the murders of Commander Haider Kazmi and Commander Hussain Kazmi.
@ali ahmed: Naval Intelligence is hiring people who can pinpoint causes behind every crime. Pls send them ur CV!
Captain of navy died ...failure of naval Intelligence agency..
@farhan: He wasn't Shia. Pls don't post a comment about something that you have no clue. @ET: Can't you guys filter out baseless comments?
ok now lets face some facts.. this was 4th Shia naval officer to have been targeted in past few months. Without recognizing a problem, you cant sort it out. problem recognition is the step precedent for its solution.
@confused: I dare to disagree! Pakistan was good under Musharraf but Karachi was NEVER GOOD under MQM's governance
@Kamil More shame on the people who r liking his comment. Pathatic
Would there be punishment to even these killers?
Collective and complete surrender infront of terrorists.
@Rocketeer: Yea, TTP and PAC are literally parties now. One's taken over ANP's base, the other PPP's.
If we don't eliminate these banned militant outfits we will never get peace in Karachi and forever dream of the way Karachi was under President Musharraf and Mayor Kamal.
after the daring attack by one SSP of karachi on one kidnapper and him turning out to be a member of naval intelligence was indeed shocking.
people will try to connect this killing with the above said incident.. Anyways RIP CAPTAIN MAY PEACE PREVAIL IN KARACHI AND WHOLE OF SOUTH ASIA
so who is safe in Karachi?
Very tragic that this Senior Officer and highly accomplished Professor at NUST has been killed. How many more will have to die before the nation wakes up? Why was he targeted? It is said that Pak Navy is one of the institutions with the highest number of extremist radical elements.
And still no army for Karachi.
@Kamil:
Shame on you for passing a judement without confirming the facts. If this was one of your family member and someone else had passed such derogratory remarks how would have you felt? Not that I have any relation with the deceased officer but we should show some responsiblity in making comments especially over someone's death.
PM yesterday made the call that we would clense this city and this is the gift we get today.
Keep on sleeping Karachiites and one by one, we all will perish if we dont take any action ourselves and kept relying on any govt.
Time to pick up arms and defend ourselves.
Was this a sectarian killing ?
Why am I not surprised ?
@Shocked: Sorry for your loss. I would like to say is that people post idiotic comments because there is no accountability on internet. I think this person 'Kamil' wont be able to say such a thing in person even in front of 2 people.
@ Kamil
To say the least, shame on you. If you associate the wrong of few corrupt Naval guyz on this honest and hard-working coz both were part of same organization, be known that Navy has around 40,000 employees. Its not difficult to find an association for you with Taliban or some other unliked personality on these lines. Respect human life
@Kamil: What a pathetic comment. I think you were trying to be funny here.
@Kamil: What kind of a person are you? He was a professor at NUST Karachi campus. Unlike you posting comments without any knowledge about the incident or the victim himself, he was doing a productive work, making engineers for the country that you reside in, and use its nationality.
So before posting such idiotic comments, use your brain, or go watch your masala news channel for your entertainment but NEVER put disgrace to an honest man's image!
The reason I know this man is because he was my professor.
The attackers "flee" the scene or "fled" the scene?
inna lillahi he we innallahe rajiun
Had known this gentleman for many years. A thourough gentleman and professional officer who always put service before self. He was an engineer with a Doctorate degree and was a beacon of inspiration for people who knew him. It's a pity we lost him. May his soul rest in peace. And may Allah give his wife a complete & speedy recovery and the strength to bear this irreparable loss. Amen.
