By contrast, the shriller end of the Indian nationalist political spectrum is having a hissy-fit and throwing its toys around the playpen — to the edification of nobody and the general hindrance of whatever positive developments might be in train. There are more measured and rational voices on the Indian side but they tend to get drowned out. If both sides are to ‘move on’ in the diplomatic vernacular, they are going to have to leave some cherished pieces of luggage beside the road. The Mumbai attack, demands for the heads of Muslim extremists on a plate, years-old violations of holy places on both sides and decades of atrocities, all of which remain as eternal impediments, exhumed and displayed every time the winds of peace begin to waft in. Sabre-rattling aside, in a conventional war, the uncomfortable reality is that Pakistan would eventually and at terrible cost, lose. The Sharif government provides what may be an extended window of opportunity in which traditional positions may be modified, but it will require restraint and statesmanship on both sides if real gains are to be made. The peace dividend for both is immeasurable, the consequences of extended conflict, unthinkable.

Belittling the Mumbai attacks will only set the relationship back. Not doing anything as Pakistan has done for close to 6 years will only leave the festering wound open.
"...they are going to have to leave some cherished pieces of luggage beside the road."
How dare Entertainment Tonight tell indiyans to move on? THAT'S NOT LIBERAL!
Lets be clear that there has been no closure on Mumbai and Pakistan can go a long way in providing that closure. Hence if there is no closure, there is no question of exhuming anything. The wounds of Mumbai is open and constant source of pain and antagonism to India. The ball is in Pakistan's court to bring the cluprits to justice.
I do not think that the current going on on the LoC is any of the four listed reasons and the last two viz "years-old violations of holy places on both sides" and "decades of atrocities" are reflective of creative journalism. The Aug 6 ambushed triggered the current fires, but tribune has no interest in stating it. It seems either is tribune is dishonest or intimidated by the Pakistan Army to state it to be the case, either ways it is not serving the cause of creating the conditions for the future it tom-toms.
I will state that beheading and mutilation of the dead is an insult to mankind even if that person is of like Col Imam, and are ways of the uncivilized beasts. Expecting others to get used to it as it is something new to them is to ask less of them. I am glad Indians are not used to it.
Even though I doubt Indian snipers are taking deliberate aim at them and hunting them for sport, killing of civilians, schoolchildren staying in school as a result of firing by Indians is something that should not happen.
@ editor "in a conventional war, the uncomfortable reality is that Pakistan would eventually and at terrible cost, lose." - c'mon sir how is that possible - zaid hamid will come on a horse and save pakistan - gazwa-e-hind - remember....lmao.
Jokes aside - a very good editorial - India needs peace as much as Pakistan does - but there has to be deliverables on both side's. How about we jointly control Siachin - as a peace mountain - and you hand over Hafeez, Dawood ?..Seems reasonable to me. That will show the Indian public Pakistan is genuine about it's commitment and the politicians in India won't be able to play the Pakistan card in the future. Peace will prevail. P:S - While you are at it send Zaid Hamid too - India is in desperate need of some good stand up comedians. That would be the icing on the cake. thx..
