Hair and blood samples given to the United States from emergency workers on the scene of last month's attack in the Syrian capital have showed signs of the powerful sarin nerve gas, Kerry told National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and Cable News Network (CNN) television.
In what he called "a very important recent development... in the last 24 hours, we have learned through samples that were provided to the United States and that have now been tested from first responders in East Damascus, (that) hair samples and blood samples have tested positive for signatures of sarin," Kerry told NBC's Meet the Press.
"Each day that goes by, this case is even stronger. We know that the regime ordered this attack. We know they prepared for it. We know where the rockets came from. We know where they landed," he added on CNN.
"We know the damage that was done afterwards. We've seen the horrific scene all over the social media, and we have evidence of it in other ways, and we know that the regime tried to cover up afterwards."
Kerry blitzed the Sunday morning television talk shows to relaunch his bid to build the case for US military strikes in Syria after President Barack Obama called for Congress to vote to authorize action.
He urged his former colleagues in Congress to give Obama a green-light for strikes against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
In a huge political gamble, Obama has committed the fate of US action to lawmakers, lifting the threat of immediate strikes.
Obama said he had decided an August 21 chemical weapons attack on a Damascus suburb that Washington says killed more than 1,400 people was so heinous that he would respond with a limited US military strike.
But, in a move which could reshape the balance of power between Capitol Hill and the presidency, he said he believed it was important to secure support from Congress to wage war.
Obama will be relatively confident of winning a vote in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats and includes a number of Republicans, like Senator John McCain, who have argued for military action against Syria.
But it would be hazardous to predict how the vote will go in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, which will debate Syria as soon as it comes back into session on September 9.
Kerry told NBC he believed the call for action would be approved by Congress.
"I do not believe the Congress of the United States will turn its back on this moment... I believe Congress will pass it," he said.
"I don't believe that my former colleagues in the United States Senate and the House will turn their backs on all of our interests, on the credibility of our country, on the norm with respect to the enforcement of the prohibition against the use of chemical weapons, which has been in place since 1925," Kerry said.
"The Congress adopted the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Congress has passed the Syria Accountability Act. Congress has a responsibility here too."

@Cynic: Wow, let's resort to name calling like "adults"!! Looking up the BLU-82 on Wikipedia returns a wealth of knowledge about the "daisy cutter", along with the note that SEVERAL were used in Afghanistan before 2004! However, if you could provide us with credible references to support your comment that THEY were "dropped indiscriminately in Afghanistan" it would be greatly appreciated!!!
@numbersnumbers: Oh Dear the third grader is back with his or her " NOT" at the end of the sentence. I think this conversation is for adults, and for your information, the daisy cutter is a fifteen thousand pounder. Also its was dropped indiscriminately in Afghanistan and killed a lot of people, men and probably women and children too. I suspect it might be a bit difficult for you to understand the seriousness if the situation.
@ssss: you can whine, you can deny, you can vent your hatred of usa and the civilized world, but wont spare the dictator;mr. assad will be history shortly
Hahahaha. How pathetic? One day they say we are 111% sure that Saddam has WMDs. Next day they say We were wrong. Where is this Shame thing? Why can't Barak Obama simply tell the truth that this world is run on only one rule "Jungle Rule". That has been the truth ever since the first human being was born. Today USA is strong so it can say "We don't need Security Council's permission to attack Syria". But what about other times when someone else will be strong and use the same phrase? I am afraid the US think tank is a bunch of silly people who can't even spare their own Marines from dying a purposeless death.
@piddler: Wow, you say "dropping 50000 pound daisy cutter bombs on helpless Afghan women and children"!!!! And of course you can give us credible references to support your fantasy!!! NOT! And of course you can provide credible references about the existence of a "50000 pound daisy cutter"!!! NOT!
For once, John Kerry could be telling the truth when he claims that Sarin gas was used in Syria, perhaps because the chemicals were supplied by his own country either directly, or through its agents in the region, with delivery men being Saudis who make no secret of their animosity towards Shias and who would be prepared to go to any extreme in order to undermine Syria, in the sure knowledge that by attacking Bashar al-Assad's forces, they could also weaken the strongest Shiite regime, Iran which they have described as a snake whose head they would love to be cut. For Saudis it must have been a wonderful plan to organize the use of chemical weapons with a view to dragging the international community: basically the United States and its poodles Britain and France, into the fray.
Unfortunately, Turkish Prime Minister Recept Teyyip Erdogan who was at one time very friendly with Bashar al-Assad and mediating between Syria and Israel has also turned against Bashar al-Assad.
For these resourceful states which provide anti-Assad forces with finance, weapons, ammunition and training, it would not be difficult to organize chemical attacks through anti-Assad fighters under their control, and that is what they did to discredit Bashar's forces which were gaining ground against their opponents.
Readers may like to read a report by website islamtimes.org titled 'Syrians In Ghouta Claim Saudi-Supplied Rebels Behind Chemical Attack' which gives details of Saudi involvement in the chemical attack.
Fortunately, British parliament rejected the intervention, weakening somewhat the US and French case as well, and people all over the world who have seen the devastation of Iraq by the same forces on the fabricated charge of possession of weapons of mass destruction, are already agitating against proposed attacks on Syria.
P.S. Only a fool could believe and claim that at a time when his forces were gaining ground, Bashar al-Assad would commit the folly of using chemical weapons, knowing full well that the United States and its gang is getting impatient to pounce on him, given half a chance.
Karachi
The united states has proof that sarin gas was used in the damascus attack. But do they have proof who used it? They have, but they won't show, because it implicates them.
Though American public is against US getting involved in another war,a strike against Assad is going to happen. Chemical weapons have been used specifically banned by UN, and all the evidence so far points to Assad. That many people of Pakistan refuse to accept it(the world knows Pakistanis refuse to consider and accept even the daily killers of their own people as a problem)is futile. Indeed,It will be better if Assad is proved to have used the weapons. If it is found that rebels has stolen them from the Government(as some in government has been saying), then it evolves into a whole new world situation. There has been deep concerns in the world community about Pakistan's Nuclear arms falling into the hands of the Taliban. That concern is going to be amplified in the world community as a result. The rest is not too hard to guess.Because Assad is at least fighting with the maximum capacity of the state to prevent the weapons getting into the hands of rebels. Pakistan is cowing down to Taliban daily,as they become more and more bold and vicious.
Attempts to make an Israel friendly Middle East has cost thousands of innocent lives and will be painful if Syria is attacked. Saudi Arabia is fully responsible for the death and destructions in many Muslim countries - Israel looks harmless when it comes to the Saudi royal family.
He may have proof but it could have been supplied by Saudi Arabia to the rebels. In any case dropping 50000 pound daisy cutter bombs on helpless Afghan women and Children is acceptable. Obama sounded like Colin Powell reruns before Iraq shock and Awe show
He is a great liar. What is the use of UNO if USA ignores it and attacks another sovereign state. It has no right to interfere in the affairs of other countries. If UNO fails to abstain USA from attacking Syeria there is no use of its existence as to keep peace in the world is its primary responsibility. for which it was eatablished. UNO must play its role effectively instead of becoming puppet of USA. and play in its hands.
It is a good development that it is now officially confirmed that deadly chemical weapons have been used by bashar alasad regime to kill syrian sunnis in huge numbers. I am hopeful the US congress will pass the resolution for military strikes against asad regime as soon as possible.
The US has proof of everything .
It can even prove that George Bush was in fact Elvis Presley , if it wants that is ...
yes....just like they had CONCRETE PROOF of iraq having WMD.
Proof is based on YouTube videos?
Being a hypocrite nation, many of us want Basharul Asad to go or at least weakened by possible US strikes. Like many of us were happy to see Saddam Hussain go. What we fail to understand terribly is that we all are pawns on a chess table!! May Allah gave us sense and sensibility to understand the game..
The question is not if the gas was used or not but who used it? where is the proof that it was Asad's regime and not by the 'rebels' themselves to attract a dwindling attention, or a rogue general for a few dollars (if we want to keep adding to the conspiracy theories). Secondly, can they afford departure from Asad, do they have a reliable successor - or creating another chaos like Libya and Egypt is the only reason. I think US should think this one through very seriously as they have a lingering foreign policy issue, their ranking in half of the world is falling while in the rest has already fallen. Even their own long term allies have backed off and this time China and Russia will stand firm. This could very well be the starting point of third WW and US should not be the reason for it's start.
And US had the evidence against Iraq's WMDs too. The 'liberated Iraq' I see today is million times worse than the Iraq under Saddam. Assad is a criminal and must go but you are mother of all evils.
Oh yeh? like you had the proof that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction? LOL!
