ISLAMABAD:

Four climbers of the 16-member Rupal Peak Peace Expedition 2013 managed to scale the 5,642-metre peak in Gilgit-Baltistan on Friday afternoon.

The remaining members were expected to make an attempt for the summit on Saturday but it could not be confirmed whether they were successful or not till the filing of this report.

The expedition, which left Islamabad on August 23, included mostly young, inexperienced and aspiring climbers including two boys, ages 12 and 14.

According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), expedition leader Muzaffar Faizi Awan, climbing leader Faiz Ali, Hamza Iqbal and Rizwanur Rehman Saifi reached the summit of Rupal Peak at 1pm on Friday after departing from the 4,600-metre Advanced Base Camp at 4am.

Both Awan and Ali are experienced mountaineers who imparted training to the younger expedition members after reaching the peak’s Base Camp on August 25.

After two days of acclimatisation, the team moved from the 4,000-metre Base Camp to the Advanced Base Camp, from where four members made the successful summit attempt on Friday, according to ACP.

The expedition was a collaborative effort of ACP and the Islamabad Alpine Association. Rupal Peak is located to the south of Nanga Parbat. It was first scaled in 1964.
