Pakistan’s Aisamul Haq Qureshi and his Dutch partner Jean-Julien Rojer qualified for the third round of the US Open after beating the team of Roberto Bautista Agut and Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of the men’s doubles event yesterday.
The duo just took just one hour and seven minutes to dispatch their Spanish opponents, going on to win a total of 63 points, according to the official US Open website.
Murray survives first scare
Defending champion Andy Murray survived his first scare of the US Open, beating Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer, 7-5, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 and going on to tackle Germany’s Florian Mayer for a last-16 spot.
“It was a very tough match,” said Murray. “I’m just glad I was able to put it together and pull it out in the fourth set.”
Meanwhile, world number one Novak Djokovic survived a first-set wobble to defeat Germany’s Benjamin Becker 7-6 (7/2), 6-2, 6-2. “Becker is a quality player and he should have won the first set,” said Djokovic, who next plays Portugal’s Joao Sousa. “I was fortunate to come out of it, but after that I felt more comfortable on the court.”
Australian Lleyton Hewitt battled to a five-set win over Argentine sixth-seed Juan Martin Del Potro. The 2001 champion defeated the 2009 winner, 6-4, 5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (7/2), 6-1 in the tournament’s biggest shock to date.
