Office bearers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Peshawar chapter on Saturday termed the Muhajir Republican Army (MRA) ‘a conspiracy against the party’.
Addressing a news conference at Peshawar Press Club, MQM district leader Asghar Shah Afridi maintained the MRA was being used as “sheer propaganda” against the MQM.
Flanked by two dozen MQM members, Afridi said if the MRA does exist, those involved in it should be punished. But, he argued, if it turns out to be nothing but propaganda, then those spreading such rumours need to be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The central leadership of MQM has directed the district chapter to clarify the party’s position, added the district leader.
“When 15,000 MQM workers were tortured and some murdered in 1992, the targeted action was based on the alleged existence of ‘Jinnahpur’ – a supposed blueprint for a breakaway state,” said Afridi. However, Brigadier Imtiaz who was part of the operation later said it was all propaganda, he added.
The district leader requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo motu notice of the matter and lead an impartial inquiry, as it was a sensitive issue for the MQM.
