Sharif met President Zardari Thursday night at the President House, where the head of the state told the premiere that his government had stopped implementation of death sentences of several accused terrorists and criminals for five years as per the party policy.
He also wished that the five-year moratorium should be put on hold until September 9, after which the government can review the decision with the new president, Mamnoon Hussain, who will assume office on September 9.
Since the authority to decide whether capital punishment should be implemented or not rests with the head of the state, Nawaz Sharif directed the interior ministry to hold the execution of death sentences.
Nawaz Sharif had earlier said that he would not come under pressure from any threat related to the policy on the death penalty. The Taliban have said they will consider the executions of any of its prisoners a declaration of war.
Official figures state that Pakistan has more than 7,000 prisoners on death row, one of the largest populations of prisoners facing execution in the world.

@Toba Alu: Maybe one day a guy gets inspired by this HOLD on EXECUTIONS or maybe your comments and God forbid he kills one of your family members... Would u still want him not to be hanged? people who murder somebody gets this punishment to be hanged till death by law (even islamic law) and not who steal or do some other non deadly crimes.. we are talking about murderers here.. put some sense into urself and ur comments before u make them public.
@salman: You have it the wrong way around. In a country like Pakistan it is idiotic to support death penalty.
The reason why it fell out of favour in other countries is that the incidence of wrongful convictions turned out to be very high now when new DNA and forensic techniques were used to investigate old crimes: basically ALOT of innocent people were sentenced to death.
Now if that is the case in developed countries imagine how many innocent people are wrongly given death in Pakistan where lodging fake cases and producing false witnesses is child's play, and given the state of our police. Why not give life in prison to all to make 100% sure no innocent is ever given death by the state?
If the condemned prisoners are not executed, there will be more killings and bloodshed in the country as the killers would know that what may they do, they will not be hanged till death.
Then there will be another jail break and the prisoners will run away once again.

Let's wait for Zardari,s exit. PPP may have some emotional reservations regarding death penalty because of Bhotto's execution but this is a totally differnt matter.Not giving death punishment to Terrorists have actually spreadeded terrorism because they have nothing to worry about especially the master minders who unlike sucide bombers value thier lives but are free to carry thier activities in jails. In many ways Pakistan is still far behind and cannot deal effectively without having death panalties actually being carried out.

I hope NS orders these executions after September 9th, he is known for taking popular decisions at times.
Lets see what he decides after 9 Sept. If they went ahead with it then it means NS mean business. If they shy away to implement the sentence then they are hand in league with these outfits OR they are also afraid of them.

How come no PMLN supporter ever critize this decision. They expect the law and order to prevail, with this law in place what is stopping criminals to commit a crime. They don't have spaces in the jail. So they allow the criminals to flee. So saddened by the current state of affairs, can't wait for the military coup.
