In the survey, a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the country were asked the following question: In your opinion is it better to live in a joint or a nuclear family after marriage?
Sixty-seven percent preferred living in a joint family after marriage, while 31 per cent supported the nuclear family setup. Two per cent gave no response.
The findings of the survey also revealed that relatively more urbanites (39 per cent) favoured the nuclear family set up as compared to their rural counterparts (26 per cent).
Surprisingly there were no significant differences in opinion among the genders on this particular topic.
However, the preference for joint family living was slightly lower than the average among those in the age group 30-50 years (62 per cent) and among those with relatively higher income of more than Rs 30,000 a month (56 per cent).
