Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini admitted he was delighted to see his side mark his first match in charge with a stylish 4-0 victory over 10-man Newcastle.
Goals from David Silva, Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri destroyed Newcastle, who had Steven Taylor sent off just before half-time.
“For me the most important thing was the way we played,” said Pellegrini. “We tried to play good football for 90 minutes. We scored four goals and we had at least six or seven chances.
“We played as an aggressive team without the ball and that’s important if we want to be an offensive team.”
Pellegrini enjoyed every minute of his first Premier League debut, but insisted he would not be happy unless his team built on there impressive start.
“I’m very happy to be here and I really enjoyed it. It’s a very good start and we must continue this way.”
The only dark cloud for Pellegrini was an injury to captain Vincent Kompany which forced the Belgian defender to come off in the 70th minute.
United bids a waste of time, says Martinez
Everton manager Roberto Martinez described Manchester United’s twin pursuit of left-back Leighton Baines and midfielder Marouane Fellaini as a ‘waste of time’.
Everton revealed that they had rejected a bid of £28 million from United for the two players, branding it ‘derisory and insulting’.
“It’s been well documented what happened with the transfer speculation. That’s been dealt with and it was all a little bit of a waste of time — time I don’t want the players to waste,” he said.
“The start of the season was important for us at Norwich and I won’t come out now and carry on talking about the speculation.”
