RAWALPINDI:

Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi bench on Monday dismissed an appeal against execution by Aqeel Ahmad, the principal accused of attacks on former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in 2009.

Advocate Zakiullah Qureshi, on behalf of his client, had filed an appeal for temporary suspension of capital punishment, that was awarded by an Anti-Terrorism Court in 2009.

However, the divisional bench, comprising Justice Ibadur Rehman and Justice Mazhar Iqbal, dismissed the appeal, saying that the punishment cannot be dismissed on the basis of news published in the media regarding suspension of death sentences. The bench added that they had not yet been informed formally about any such development by the government.

On October 10, 2009 militants mounted a brazen attack on GHQ. Nine of the attackers were killed in the operation while one, Aqeel Ahmad, alias Dr Usman, was arrested.
