The stock of medium-enriched uranium gas is closely watched in the west, and Israel has threatened to attack if diplomacy fails to curb Iran's programme and it amasses enough of the material - a short technical step from weapons-grade - to make a bomb.
Iran says its programme is for power generation and medical purposes only, but the election of the relative moderate Hassan Rouhani as president has raised hopes that talks to address the decade-old nuclear dispute could be unblocked.
Since Iran began enriching uranium to a 20 per cent concentration of the fissile isotope in 2010, it has produced more than the 240-250 kg that would be needed for one weapon. But it has kept the stockpile below the stated Israeli "red line" by converting part of the uranium gas into oxide powder in order, it says, to yield fuel for a medical research reactor. The diplomats, accredited to the United Nations' International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Iran might even have stepped up this conversion in recent months.
If this is confirmed in the IAEA's quarterly report, due around Aug. 27-28, the inventory of 20 percent gas will rise by less than the output, which has been about 15 kg per month. One of the diplomats suggested the stockpile may show little or even no growth during the last three months, saying "Everyone expects there to be as much or more conversion". But he and others cautioned against seeing it as a signal by the new Iranian president as the uranium conversion began in late 2011.
Iran's stockpile of 20 per cent uranium gas amounted to 182 kg in May, according to the IAEA's last report, an increase of 9 per cent since February but still well below the "red line" set by Israel, believed to be the region's only nuclear weapons power.
While the conversion activity may help to push back any Israeli decision on whether to attack Iranian nuclear sites, Western diplomats say Iran needs to do much more to allay suspicions about its atomic programme. They note that uranium oxide powder can be converted back into gas form relatively quickly.
The six powers negotiating with Iran - the United States, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia - want it to stop enriching uranium to 20 per cent and suspend work at the underground Fordow site where most of this activity is pursued.
Rouhani, a former nuclear negotiator who oversaw a previous deal to suspend Iran's uranium enrichment, has pledged to improve ties with the outside world and secure an easing of international sanctions. But he insists on Iran's right to refine uranium, and the government has made clear that it would expect a major easing of sanctions, which are hurting its oil-dependent economy, in exchange for any agreement to curb enrichment.

Let's see, Iran is one o only two countries on the planet that centralizes all of its internet traffic through government controlled servers (China being the other) and limits its people to 128K speeds (hello AOL) and this is progress? And now its mandating curriculum for students to learn how to bring own drones? Guess math and science aren't top priorities anymore. And now Iran is backing Assad who is using nerve agents on his own people. Nice.

Also America through ADL, YOUTUBe & GOOGLE is banning Presstv. If liberals believe in Freedom of speech then why this?
@Change Iran Now: Then go whine where Countries have used them rather than someone who does not even have them & just plan for development uses.
How about you change ur display name from "Change Iran Now" to change "USA's ignorant policy of interfering in everyone's business".
2ndly we have just saw the news that CIA did the coup in Iran even when Iran was not in WAR with them.

Technically USA is in WAR with Iran & Pakistan. You just have to open eyes & use some common sense to see that.
Personally I'm not in favor of anyone having nuclear weapons, that includes the US, Russia, China, even Israel and Pakistan. That being said, the US dropped the bomb while at war with an enemy that attacked it. Last time I checked Iran wasn't at war with anyone (although the Sunnis might disagree). I think everyone around the world would sleep a little sounder if we just got rid of all the nukes everywhere.
@Change Iran Now: Why change Iran? Why not change the attitude of America & Israel towards Iran?
Liberals claim that everyone should have equal rights. So do Iranians to have Nuclear weapons. Lets not forget that its USA who has bombed & used nuclear weapons on innocent people & not Iran or any other Muslim country. Practice before they preach.
The important fact not to be missed is that Iran has already enriched more than sufficient uranium material to build a nuclear weapon. The fact that is converting some of its excess material into a gas form (which by the way can be readily converted back to weapon's grade material) still leaves an abundant amount for Iran to build the first of its nuclear arsenal. The real issue has been the fact that Iran has built a massive centrifuge capability to enrich all the material it needs at any time. It has already built 18,000 of them with 10,000 in operation, more than sufficient. What matters is if the West can force Rouhani and Khamenei to give up their nuclear ambitions with concrete action and not simply talk. It's highly doubtful given Rouhani's long and loyal service to the regime as outlined at the site www.hassan-rouhani.info. The only real hope is to continue economic pressure on the regime leadership and enable regime change through the Iranian people.
@syed Iranian got double standerd and oil/gas too which u don't have it bhai mian boss.
@Syed, ditto, agree
Why can Israel have nulcear weapons & not Iran? Iran is the only Islamic Country left who has some self-respect. When a drone comes they bring it down rather than "Islamic Republic of Pakistan" who keeps on letting drones kill there own citizens for some $$
