Five policemen shot dead in Karachi

The policemen had parked their patrol car on the bridge for routine checking when it was attacked.

KARACHI: As many as five policemen were shot dead on Friday evening in two incidents.

At least four policemen were shot dead when they were attacked near a bridge in Shah Faisal area of Karachi.

The policemen were in their patrol car. They had parked the car in the middle of the bridge located near Bagh-e-Korangi as part of their routine snap checking procedure when they were attacked.

The attack killed three policemen on the spot, and injured one other.

The dead and injured were rushed to Jinnah Hospital where the injured cop succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased policemen were identified as Zulfiqar, Afza and Ghulam Shabbir. The injured policeman, who later succumbed to his injuries, was identified as Sarwar.

In a separate incident, the guard of Kharadar police station chief was shot dead.

Gul Khan, 60, was deputed with the Kharadar SHO when they engaged with armed assailants near the paper market. In the ensuing exchange of fire, Khan suffered a fatal wound.

Aftab Kenneth Wilson | 10 years ago | Reply It is very unfortunate but the blame also goes on these policemen who are offering themselves as sitting ducks. Why all of them were in their vehicle during this routine check-up? There was no cover-up knowing that many of their mates have been gunned down due to their own negligence.

This is most shocking, indeed. Whatever is said about their general performance, policemen have been one of the unsung heroes in the context of Karachi, given their limitations but still keeping the will to continue.. .
