MANSEHRA:

An SHO and five robbers were killed in a shoot-out during a bank robbery on Friday.

Four police personnel and three robbers were injured, while the other accused managed to escape with their wounded accomplices and cash.

DPO Abdul Ghafoor Afridi told journalists eight armed robbers came to a UBL branch on Shinkiari Road and held the bank staff and customers at gunpoint. They collected money from the ATM machine and were about to escape when city SHO Mubarak Khan, who was on routine patrol, reached the bank. The SHO noticed unusual movement and saw the bank’s employees were held at gunpoint. Khan opened fire, injuring one of the perpetrators severely. The DPO added the robbers threw a hand grenade and killed the SHO on the spot.

The robbers then opened fire indiscriminately at police reinforcements that reached the site, injuring cadet Farooq, SHO Saddar Khushal Khan, ASHO Saddar, traffic warden Amjad and the bank’s security guard Guldad.

Resorting to heavy fire, the robbers escaped the scene with three injured accomplices in a cab they forced themselves into.

The DPO claimed Rs1.8 million was stolen, while the branch manager said the figure was Rs10 million.

The robbers, who were on the run from Mansehra police, took the cab towards Thandiyani. When the Abbottabad police tried to stop their vehicle near Nawanshehr another fire fight ensued in which ASP Abbottabad Hasnain was injured and three robbers were killed.  Only pistols were recovered from the deceased perpetrators.

It was an excellent operation conducted by both Mansehra and Abbottabad Police. The martyred SHO Mubarak, who also served in Abbottabad police, was amongst the noblest figures in the region. Not to forget the role of the cab driver who actually cooperated with police to reach the three escapees. Well Done Police Department, We are proud of you. Prayers and Honours for the martyred SHO (May his soul RIP), as well as the injured officers.
