Five rebels were killed during a gun battle with the army on Thursday in Hafrada forests, 100 kilometres from Srinagar, the main city of Indian Kashmir.
"The operation was launched on specific intelligence about the presence of a group of terrorists," an officer told media, asking not to be named.
Further operations beginning on Monday saw another seven men killed around the Pak-India border, known as the Line of Control, army general Gurmit Singh told reporters.
Singh said the militants belonged to Pakistan based Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba groups.
About a dozen militant groups have been fighting Indian forces in Kashmir since 1989 seeking independence for the region or a merger with Pakistan.
The violence has declined during the last decade but the fighting has left tens of thousands of people, mostly civilians dead.

I request all my friends from Pakistan or India, on this board, to mark that any time I repeat any time a civil government in Pakistan moves to normalize relations with India the Establishment in Pakistan presses the gas pedal to full and the terror attacks increase, charges and counter charges begin and press is utilized to fan the hate India campaign. Simple the bread, butter and and jam of Pakistan Army is hate India. If there is peace and borders open then what will be the use of the Army? Wonder if this will be put on board.

Before you preach to us the virtues of democracy, maybe you should practice it at home. Perhaps, give the people of Baluchistan, Sindh and Pakhtoonwa the right exercise their franchise. The right to decide whether they should be a part of Pakistan or not. Come and preach to us after you have practiced what you are demanding of us.

@numbersnumbers: I hope you understand the concept of "covering fire." The Pakistan army offers covering fire so that the terrorists can be pushed into the Indian side. They hide in the dense forests before dispersing away on to their respective missions.

Pakistan army needs to understand that they. Cannot bring back the 90s. If they feel that after 2014 once more they will unleash unemployed jihadis from Western border on an unprepared India, they need to know, India is no longer unprepared. Also the whole world views this type of terrorism differently now than it did in 1990s.
@Ace: Freedom fighter has to elong to the land. These terrorists are pushed across the borders and hence cannot be classified as freedom fighters. Secondly Nelson Mandela followed the path of Mahatma Gandhi and believed in non violence. Hence that comparison is totally of the mark. If however you compared hem to George Washington for instance, I would say George Washington did not kill ordinary British civilians as these terrorists do.

The last I checked the news, these primitive horsemen with shiny swords were meeting their match with technology like drones, air power, tanks etc. Also, quite a few of these horsemen have been clamoring to get visas and asylum to wetsern countries, were the horses are having a tough time getting past immigration and security.
The true believers can fantasize all they want with their primitive thought process of angrily shaking their swords in impotent rage, while they will be eliminated and shunned by the rest of the world with modern technology.
