Some 200 people visited the free screening camps for hepatitis B and C organised by Shifa International Hospital (SIH) at its gastroenterology section on Wednesday.
Ten individuals tested positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV) and one tested positive for hepatitis B virus (HBV).
Atique Ahmed, an engineer who was diagnosed with HCV, was previously cured of the virus after treatment.
SIH’s Chief of Medicine and Gastroenterology Dr Nasir Khokhar said around 4.5 per cent of the population was HCV infected whereas 2.5 per cent suffered from HB, according to a press release.
Newborns of long-term carriers, individuals with multiple sex partners, intravenous drug users, prisoners and healthcare workers may get infected, he added. Fatigue, vascular spiders, finger clubbing and bruising, an enlarged or shrinking liver are some symptoms of chronic liver disease.
