Post-colonial state and society

Letter October 04, 2010
The jump in population is having a serious impact on scarce resources. Pakistan should consider a one-child policy.

TORONTO, CANADA: I agree with much of what Ayesha Siddiqa has said in her article “Post-colonial state and society in Pakistan” (October 3). Children should be taught personal skills at all levels of education and these should be made part of the basic curriculum. In fact they should be taught all this before secondary – or vocational/technical – education. Also, couples who do not have children should be subsidised if they pursue higher education – and those who have several offspring should be left to their own devices. The jump in Pakistan’s population is having a serious impact on scarce resources and for that very reason the country should consider implementing a one-child policy a la China.
