Youm-e-Ali: Cellphone services to be suspended in Lahore, Karachi

Mobile services will remain suspended in Karachi from 6am to 8pm, and from 4pm to 8pm in Lahore.

LAHORE/ KARACHI: Mobile phone services are scheduled to be suspended in Lahore and Karachi on Wednesday, on account of Youm-e-Ali, Express News reported.

Cellular services will be suspended from 4pm to 8pm in Lahore. While Karachi will suffer a prolonged closure from 6am to 8pm.

There were some reports that cellular services in other parts of the country may also be suspended.

The government has also decided to impose a ban on pillion riding in the areas adjacent to the procession.

In Lahore, DIG operations Rai Mohammad Tahir said that the procession will be monitored with the help of 300 close circuit camers and people will be allowed to attend the procession only after being frisked at three separate points.

Snipers would also be positioned above high rise buildings along the procession route.

Tahir added that as many as 5000 police personnel will be deployed in Lahore.

Meanwhile in Karachi, a Pakistan Telecommunication Authority spokesperson told The Express Tribune that cellular services will remain suspended in Karachi from 6am to 8pm.

Police has also issued a traffic map for Karachi, listing alternative traffic routes and all the areas which have have been blocked off.
