Illogical criticism

Letter July 30, 2013
The writer has unnecessarily and prematurely assessed the alleged malafide intention of the newly-elected government.

LAHORE: This is apropos the article “Nawaz and the DCC” (July 29) by Arif Rafiq, which seemed to indulge in criticism for the sake of criticism alone. Though the topic of convening the Defence Committee of the Cabinet (DCC) is an important one, the writer has unnecessarily and prematurely assessed the alleged malafide intention of the newly-elected government. The strange pattern of the article put the blame of the dormant DCC during the past five years on the shoulders of the present government. As indicated in the article itself, the PML-N has made the promise to make the DCC functional and effective in national politics. That is why we must give reasonable time to the government for its implementation.

The article supports Imran Khan’s request to have an audience with Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on security issues but paradoxically condemns such personal meetings by the prime minister as an expression of his so-called ‘personalised’ style of politics. This seems to be an obviously unfair assessment by the writer. In this initial period of the government’s tenure, we must highlight important issues with the intention to direct the government in the right direction rather than casting aspersions on it in an illogical manner. For the sake of national political poise, we must avoid accusing the government on routine matters, such as taking initial briefings on the national security situation.
