To paraphrase John Lowy, Aamir Liaquat’s truth is too strange for credible fiction. But it all just fell into place for Pakistan’s first true televangelist. For one brief moment in the mid-2000s, his stars aligned: the MQM was running Karachi, General Musharraf was shaking his fists at passersby, and a loosed media was exploding all over the place. As golden boy of all three, Mr Liaquat took ‘enlightened moderation’, those weasel words everyone was repeating back then, and turned it into “Aalim Online”. He never looked back. We could never look away.
And there lies the problem. Mr Liaquat’s Ramazan viewership is massive and growing. A fraction may watch his show to write scathing blogs afterwards; the vast majority will take him seriously. This lends Mr Liaquat a giant megaphone into society, with ideas that range from dangerous to highly dangerous. This also makes him a cash cow — the fattest one this quarter — one that network executives are finding increasingly hard to sacrifice purely for ethics’ sake.
But like most gentlemen with white collars, the network bosses have tried hard to clean up the doctor’s grimier younger days, when our airwaves would be filled with primetime hate. Part of this is down to Mr Liaquat’s skill at reinventing himself.
The other part is media spin; a fresh narrative where Aamir Liaquat helps us achieve another, more worldly nirvana: Soft Pakistan. In a warm and fuzzy profile by The New York Times, one TV exec argued that it would take an Aamir Liaquat to lead society away from the extremist abyss, admitting “we need people like him to ease us down the mountain”. Earning his keep, Mr Liaquat played his adorable self, returning from New York with something he called “his Manhattan sauce”. A character arc so convincing, it almost makes us forget so much money’s at stake.
But even shorn of his past, Aamir Liaquat 2.0 remains as unhealthy for society as the original. Few would disagree that Mr Liaquat’s broadcasts headline Ramazan. But besides fasting, the holy month is the time we lower our voices and open our minds. It’s meant for restraint and reflection, a spiritual experience that makes us aware there’s a higher calling.
But Mr Liaquat’s every intention, it seems, is to upend that higher calling and drive us ever further into life’s rat race. What should be about ideas and introspection is now about washing machines and DVD players, as Mr Liaquat wheels around flinging home appliances at his guests. Plugging his sponsor’s products in ways that would make the cast of “Bulbulay” blush (“Dunia ka sab se shaandaar mobile aap ka hua”), Mr Liaquat has smothered the spirit of Ramazan in Firdaus lawn. And for a society already more materialistic than measured, it is the wrong message to be receiving.
Mr Liaquat’s show needs to be pulled, or at the very least overhauled. Since only network chiefs can exercise the first option, chances are low. If high ratings can justify giving away human babies — amid motorbikes and clothes irons — studio heads certainly aren’t taking their viewers’ sensibilities into account. Overhaul would require Mr Liaquat to change, preferably back to the gentleman that pushed for a fatwa against suicide bombing some years ago. But even in that incarnation, Mr Liaquat was neither enlightened nor moderate. He changes according to climate.
It’s left to the viewers to set that climate for him. There are growing signs of disgust: at the gaudiness of the show, at his casual rants against critics, in giving away orphan children on national television. But it was Mr Liaquat’s recent treatment of Taher Shah that revolted people to anger. This is in large part because it was a moment of clarity. For someone who claimed that his degrees were real, that his outtakes were fake, that the cricket team lost because their shoe soles were coloured the green of Islam, there was finally nothing left to lie about. The essence of Aamir Liaquat was in sharp relief.
Like a toe-curling inversion of Britney Spears, Mr Liaquat whirled around Mr Shah with a snake slung across his shoulders. He was physical and crass. Mr Shah, meanwhile, showed us the kind of humility befitting a Ramazan special. A tweet by Mr Sami Shah does more justice to him than all the ink that’s flown since his song went viral: “I think I love Taher Shah unironically. He put his art out there. That’s more than most of us ever achieve.” God bless him.
If Mr Liaquat’s target audience still requires dissuading, it should consult his outtakes leaked one fateful Ramazan sehri-time. In one clip, in a question alluding to rape, a caller asks if religion would permit a woman to take her own life beforehand. Steadying himself, Mr Liaquat’s guest mufti begins, “Jee, bohat naazuk surat-i-haal hai,” before Mr Liaquat starts snorting, then giggling, then finally losing his breath. The mufti is laughed into silence, laughter that seems to be coming from the depths of Mr Liaquat’s soul. By now, convulsing with laughter, Mr Liaquat manages to wheeze, “Bohat naazuk surat-i-haal hai?”
It’s all there; the schoolboy sadism, the screwball sense of humour. The authentic, out-of-character Dr Aamir Liaquat. It’s not too hard to imagine a similar reaction whenever his ratings come in. We could do our part and change the channel.

It's obvious to see "people" having much idle time to boast about Mr. Amir Liaquat, while our country is on the verge of destruction. I am not supporting Mr. Amir Liaquat nor I am against him but the fact is that we should point out the main elements which are responsible for creating chaos in our country rather to condemn a person.
@Wess: Sadly, the hatred of Karachi haters don't end at there. They reject the Pak Ideology, the two nation theory. So much so, that they consider them heroes who were our enemies. They even are against partition and all that Pakistan believe and dream for.
@Al jami: Pretty sad about stereo types like you, Karachi gave loads and is still giving to Pakistan. Mohammad Ali Jinnah being one of them.
Cant judge the whole of Karachi by just 2 of these. May Allah help open your eyes beyond the divide that blinds you from looking at the real picture.
@Maliha: Wow, really?
These shows keeping us in 17th century AD I don't understand why our media trying to terrorize our mind????
@Muziqmonk: “Amir Liaqat is a mere symptom of the disease befallen on our nation i.e. Ziaism.”
Sorry to break your bubble sir.. Anti-Ahmadi attacks have occurred in Bangladesh and Malaysia as well. Its a problem with/within Islam, and has to be dealt by reforming the religion.
I could kiss the author ! I feel nauseated every time I come across that show but I couldn't get past exasperation and disgust to actually put it into words. Glad someone else did and rightly so !
excellent analysis, very well written!
Where is 'Geo Asool' ?
@Asad Rahim Khan
What a fantastic piece you have written here!!! bravo!!!
I not only agree with you but fully support and understand the frustration we all go through who remembers the true spirit of this holy month of Ramadan.
But on the flip side: I believe that too much of anything is bad! We Pakistani were used to live in the times where we had only one channel and couple of newspapers.
Then came the Media Boom (which was a good thing) but the compelling power of Indian media and cinema caught us in a flux. We (The Paki Channels) started showing news like the Indians do. There is absolutely no problem with Indian media as it reflects their society and norms which were/ are completely different from us. Sadly, all those torch bearers of Freedom of Speech back then got a glimpse of the money involved and they never looked back. Journalists became Entrepreneurs, and invented new ways to dramatize the news to sell it to the masses. The sincerity to the profession was long forgotten as they by now have started a movement of changing the ideology of this already confused nation. I remember the dialogue from the movie "The Devil's Advocate", "Look but don't touch, touch but don't taste, taste but don't swallow". This is how our media is bifurcating our fragile society.
Now the people of our country, we, in general are full of life, happy go lucky and a very vibrant nation but in the midst of things we lost our true brand. Our literacy already below par, unemployment, deprived of the basic necessity in these 66 years of what we call "FREEDOM", we nuked this nation with information in a way that we no longer can differentiate right from wrong. The prime time talk shows went viral, people glued to the news channels irrespective of what trash (no offense) they are broadcasting, judging people and their believes, hatred, insomnia (believe me i have met people who are in this state), confusion, low self esteem and God knows what else (sarcastically being ignorant).
Media in any country is a very sensitive element which should play its role in the development and prosperity of that country. The money factor will always be there but the CODE should always remain intact that no matter what, it should be for the betterment of the people of the country.
Mr. Dr. Aamir is also one of those who believes in the enlightenment of the very confused part of our society and be a brand (which i guess he is by now). Then manipulate them, work on your agenda and make more money. This vicious circle has nothing to do with preaching religion or finding God, its only about making people believe and adding zeros in your bank account.
If Aamir Liaquat is most viewed scholar in Pakistan! it shows how LOW we have fallen as a nation! clearly his video exposed him & his character and yet people watch him more & more! shame on this nation for doing it!
@Khan You are hilarious. Why don't you write about Syria? If you read this guys previous articles, it would be pretty obvious he's the least liberal writers ET features (a bad thing in my book). And that he writes conservative takes on foreign picy that i totally disagree with. But he is spot on here. If you think baby selling shouldn't be censored, by all means come up with a novel means to degrade little children. This is excellent writing, and I was waiting for the second someone was going to moan, "oh but what about the Congo?"
@Al jami: and jobs to people from all over pakistan. dont forget that :D
Excellent profile piece painting the namoona that is Dr Amir Liaqat (English doesn't have quite an equivalent for that word). "Too strange for credible fiction" he truly is, and it would behoove us to change the channel. Perhaps it is the penchant Pakistanis have for slapstick humor and accessible bite-size religion that keeps him in business. Overall, argument well-made.
Ahh thank goodness for the rambling of our so called liberal enlightened. On one hand we have Syrian rebels destroying Shia shrines, taliban killing policemen and freeing over 200 inmates from a prision in Ramzan, on the other "Violent floral patterns, singing Rishi Kapoor songs and distributing free mangoos" the later is warranting more venom in our society then the former. I for one choose latter.
The problem with the taliban is that they only want their brand of Islam to be practiced, and you, my dear sir, are no different. If people enjoy Amir Liaqat (as the ratings can attest) he more then deserves to sell his brand of snake oil, just as you are doing.
Calling on Amir Liaqat's show to pulled from air because he does not subscribe to your particular brand of "sensibility" is no different then Zia-ul-haq going on his prohibition binge. Censorship is a slippery slope, as a journalist do you really want to delve down that road?
Please ride your high horse into the sunset because we surely don't need another preacher telling us how to live our lives in Ramzan with "restraint and reflection, a spiritual experience that makes us aware there’s a higher calling.".
It is difficult to understand why Geo channel is bent upon projecting this Hpocrite and greedy for self glorifying so much. can geo t.v throw some light with others why is he being favoured so much inspite of being so controversial and tons of evidence against hin on u tube.
Popularity is good for TV channels, more adds sold more millions raked in. It all business. No politics here nothing more than income booster. Don't waste your time on racism or culturism. That's short sightedness. When you have business you will want such guys too.
@Muziqmonk: "Amir Liaqat is a mere symptom of the disease befallen on our nation i.e. Ziaism."
Why blame Zia for a problem originating at the source? Afterall, Zia must have taken dictates from somewhere.
Amir Liaquat is a true representation of pakistani society....a person who covers almost all the evils of our society....bingo !!
Amir Liyaqat is an idiot. I can't stand him for a second on TV. This is a sorry state of Panistani minds.
An excellent piece and profound insight into the matter; however, this is not the platform or the language to reach out to the targeted audience of the show responsible for skyrocketing the ratings.
Did any one checked our ex dictators digrees who made law for us hahahhah
@Asad Rahim Khan sahib U know what after all its a Educated karachiete man ..........
I think this article does justice to Mr. Liaquat's inner Mephistopheles.
You gave words to my sentiments about this self proclaimed scholar, social activist and driver of the current media bandwagon. Well expressed.
Excellently written! Thanks!
lol but I never watched him. he disguised me from first day. he is a hypocrite. I just switch channel whenever I see amir liaqut on screen and I will never let my family watch his any show.
So well said!
This is Show Business folks. You show what sells, not what you wish you could show. It's common around the globe. Public hatred for such shows is common too. It's nothing more than Nilaam Ghar or Zia Muhiuddin Show of 70's really. It's true too that Pak public is tired of corruption, extremism and related violence and want to cheer for something.
Mr Liaqat took to his heart what George Carlin said: "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups" but somebody please tell him that the Religion in the wrong hands can do a lot of damage to a country as a whole !!!
Thank you! You've said it!
Amir Liaqat has a cult following. Something like what ZA Bhutto had in the 1970s. Our people are so gullible. God save Pakistan.
Unfortunately said trend has been prevailed all over the media. Just to get higher ratings these tycoons can surpass all limits. The audience in these shows are from mostly not literate class or not well read. If someone answer wrong hosts on the show humiliate them. Using religion in any month irrespective of Ramadan selling your goods should be without earning money. All Ramadan shows folks need to be asked to conduct their shows as volunteer. Pemra is supposed to take notice how these guys are exploiting the religion.
@Optimist: Probably Firdous ki Lawn !
I Doubt the popularity of this show,Can the statistics be made public?
The words of Sheikh Rasheed come to my mind: Is mulk ne bhi yeh dekhna tha ke Zardari is mulk ka sadar hoga aur Raja Pervez Ashraf Prime Minister. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un.
Add this: Aur Aamir Liaquat is mulk ka most viewed "scholar"
including AL (who is simply and actor and thoroughly disgusting!) and others splashed across billboards advertising ramzan programs 'religion' has become some kind of an entertainment!! pathetic state of affairs! if one notices the majority seen in his program belongs to a class which hasn't seen any of his leaked vidoes. so the showman carries on!
I LOVED, LOVED this piece. I thought your talents lay best in viewing the world through a historical lens but damn, the man can write humour too.
The most sensible take-down of the stunt and prescription of how we can contribute to clipping Amir Liaqat's wings if the network in question, won't. Well done!
Amir Liaqat is catering to the emotional needs of a real sick and venal society and that is why he clicks. He would continue to sell his sugar coated pernicious non sense tyo the chagrin of whatsoever is left of collective sanity of a rapidly diminishing minority.
The thing which annoys me most is the manner in which ppl are begging for bikes and other prizes and they dont feel ashamed a bit. This guy is turning the nation into bunch of beggers and unforunately ppl like to beg on his show, not even realizing that they are being watched by millions. If you can sell your hardship with tears in your eyes, you could be a star on his show and also make money.
The bottom line is that he is making money, big time. Other channels like ARY and Express are following suite, however in their limited capacity. Express Channel has also not done any service to the society by hiring Drama Queen and proven fake, Maya Khan during their Ramzan Tranmission.
Owners of the channels should realize that their short terms profits are creating long term complications in the society.
I am so disgust with misuse of Islam on TV that I have not plugged in my TV this Ramazan. . Most of the people who criticise him, I ask them not to watch him. Almost all of them have similar reason: 'It is my wife who is glued to his show'. ' Can any woman please tell me why they love him so much? Either he appears very sexy or very spiritual to some women. I fail to see a pious man or a hunk in him. So what quality attracts women to him??
Amir thrives in the fact that selling religion to the public in Pakistan is the easiest thing to do. On top of that, he has command on Urdu language, hence is successful. He is a shallow person, not much substance and reflects the society by and large.
Very well written, marked by compact precise expression without wasted words. I see a bright future for this author, if he continues down this road.
By watching his latest transgression with Tahir Shah one can conclude that this person is probably psychologically ill. Note that he reassures his control over people by using debasing language and then checking out their response, this gives him a sense of accomplishment knowing that he is all powerful over these people and they would comply to what ever abuse he chooses to bless them with. No one questions him... and he gets narcissistic supply out of this. He also gets pleasure by trolling and teasing other sects knowing the chaos he has created. Every thing is a joke to him he lacks empathy totally and even serious topics are just object of entertainment for him, no matter what he is unable to take his mind out of the drain.
What baffles me is that despite everyone knowing the true identity of this guy, the networks won't even bother to stop this guy
He is nothing more than a intelligent juggler for a stupid nation correct me if am wrong, isnt it the same channel from where he was kicked of few years ago for speaking vulgar words
Asad: if you mentioned MQM, it would only have been fair if you had also mentioned that he was expelled from MQM due to lack of attention to political constituents as well as ridiculous provocations against a minority group.
@Al jami: Karachi has given way too much good and great individuals to Pakistan: the list is long and folks like you ungrateful. Narrowing Karachi down to 2 controversial individuals speaks of your ethnic mindset.
I am falling in love with the author. What a prodigy he is? His writings are getting more polished and sophisticated, every passing day. I am assuming that he woudl only be in his early to mid 20's now, I am awe stuck, Imagine what would it be like to read his works later? Bravo Asad!!! You humble and inspire us.Keep these op-ed pieces coming,.
Aamir Liaquat is the symptom, Pakistanis are the disease.
Amir Liaqat is a mere symptom of the disease befallen on our nation i.e. Ziaism.
people claim this is what viewers want to watch. Isn't it absurd to think we WANT to watch what is being aired right at our faces on a network channel people got used to watching over the past decade? Call it a conspiracy theory if you may, but the more wise will understand the media began shaping mindsets long back. When did we see singers being invited to Ramzan shows? None of my acquaintances love his show. then there is another side, when the entertainment industry has nothing good to offer, the majority of our population which is of an intellectual level to term him a religious and enlightened man, the only few channels they will be left to watch are the ones by the network which airs his show. Fortunately i am not one of the unfortunate who switch the channel, but sadly, most of our people have let themselves be brainwashed by the media and lost the ability to think.
tribune i hate you, why eating my precious comment in holy month of ramzan
Mr Liaquat is simply an opportunist.
finally someone other than the valiant dr zia wrote what should b written... We can't blame mr liaquat alone for earning through atrocious antics as its the public which is fulfilling this monster's satiety in form of ratings...... he is not wining hearts instead he is trading the poverty of Karachi's most deprived areas who make majority of his audience. we should know that faith is always at stake in poverty better to exterminate bigger evils first and the offshoot would die their natural deaths..
Amir liaqat is a hypocrate ,you can easily see his evil side when he ridiculed tahir shah, all his sweet talk is just a show, and geo tv should be ashmed of itself for hiring this evil man,the show presented by junaid jamshed and waseem badami is miles better, junaid comes accross as totally genuine...only if the people of pakistan can be smart enough to distinguish between sincere and hypocrate all their would be sorted!!
Big time hypocrite. Munafiq #1
Ghalib film dekhi aapne?
Completely agree with you. I never watched his amazing Ramzan transmission because I could tell from the commercials what kind of a over the top drama he'll put on. Mr. Fake Scholar needs to stop fooling people in the name of religion. He lost of the essence of Ramzan in his special Ramzan transmission. He's made it in some kind of glitzy game show. As far as his treatment of Taher Shah is concerned, I haven't seen what he did but I'm disgusted from some articles I read. Learn some manners before you go teaching people about Islam.
When Sana Bucha left her TV is was said that it was because Amir Liaquat was joining the channel. Now if that is true we have at least one person true to her convictions. If the other male anchors had her guts the channel and others would have got the message.
@saeed: Nothing more that I will agree with you. It is hypocrisy at full display. Is this not the guy who claimed to be Ph.D. and his diploma proved to be fake?
Although the writer is mostly correct in his opinion, he should not have dragged MQM and Pervez Musharraf into this to prove his point. By dragging MQM and Pervez Musharraf, he himself reflected some of Amir Liaquat in him.
It speaks volumes about the country, its people and its media houses where political talk shows are the most viewed programs and Mr. Amir Liaquat is the most viewed person.
One TV exec argued that it would take an Aamir Liaquat to lead society away from the extremist abyss. And it takes an Op-ED by Asad Rahim Khan to demonstrate why this is exactly so wrong. Truly an excellent piece.
Karachi gave two peoples to Pakistan Altaf bhai, and liaqat bhai....
Just one word for him half mullah half tabeeb for half Urdu half English nation of Pakistan.
It's unfair and ridiculous to castigate Amir Liaqat alone. The real culprit is the Pakistani public that reveres him and helps him sustain substantially high ratings of his shows
